Kid cracked the screen on my Compaq V4000 laptop. Best Buy says $1000
to replace. I say that's pretty funny for a $600 computer. Anybody
know where to get one fixed for a reasonable amount or should I trash it?

What's eBay have to say about it? Possibly a new screen or perhaps a used
laptop that is the same model there?

I'd look for a used one on eBay, and either use it, or swap screens.
Or you could opt for a new upgrade:

I don't think you can repair it for less than simply buying a new computer.

Don't think of it as losing a laptop, you've gained an auxillary
desktop (using another monitor).

If you're lucky, you'll find a used laptop screen on eBay. I used to
have an iBook with a cracked screen and replacements were sure going for
big $$$ on ebay... guess it's a common problem :)
Good luck!

Somebody posted a link to one but I already ordered up a new laptop from
Best Buy. I'll just sell the one I have and be done with it.

Or, try a Google search: These people will do it, but apparently they only
serve certain area codes.

if I may :-) I have an iBook G4 with a fried motherboard but fine
screen; what would you consider a fair price? :-)
this is so completely OT, oh well, I use my iBook to check
the weather and do flight planning, so it is kinda sorta a
piece of avionics :-)

to add some aviation related content:
be sure to wipe all sensitive data from your laptop before going throught
US customs. They may seize the laptop anytime.

the US and transfer the money at _resonable_ costs (swift is a no-go due to
costs and privacy)?

That's right I forgot. Hey Montblack, you wanted to buy it but I think
the Peoples Republic of Minnesota will cause us a problem. Better let
me mail it to Iowa and you can smuggle it across the border during a
Gopher game.
