I found a new book, "Soaring - Beyond the Basics" written by Dale
Masters out in California at Great Western Soaring. Anyone read this
book? Maybe give a short review of it?

I've got to buy that book too; I found a reference to it while reading
through the (many) pages of the Great Western website.

They've also got a really good section on ridge soaring you may want to
check out... may be part of Dale's book?

Be sure to read the all-text page; scroll down to the lower right corner.
Lot's of good information on this website once you navigate your way through
it.

Dale Masters signed me off to re-solo just last Friday. I'd originally
soloed in 1970 at age 14 in a 2-33, but began spending all my flying money
on girls by 15. Oh well; good memories there too!

This time solo was in a DG-505. Dale's been a truly fine instructor, & the
Dirk-Glasser obviously a quantum leap beyond the old 2-33.

Great Western has every kind of lift with the mammoth San Gabriel mountains
just behind the field & the desert out front. Ridge soaring over the San
Gabriels with the Los Angeles coastline in sight was awesome!

I'm going back out to GW to fly Thursday/Friday & will buy the book. Dale
never mentioned he'd written it. This guy need a good L.A. publicist!

This book is a must read for all soaring pilots.
Dale Masters book covers everything but the basics. Safety,
Preflights, Ridge, Wave, Thermals, Shear, Streets, and so on. His book
has a lot of useful information. Also, it is a real book, not just a
booklet.
Dale is excellent instructor and he LOVES soaring. He is the master of
mountain flying.
Mr. Masters also wrote: INTRODUCING the ORGANIC VARIOMETER at

August 2004)
