So, anyone ever seen it from the air or a boat?

I have. Not from the air, neither from a boat, but from shore.
Just once (or *maybe* twice in >40 years).

It is real enough.

At sea, it's a routine event if the weather's good enough to see the
horizon.

Used to see it regularly on the day's last flight from St. Croix to
St. Thomas.

I've seen it in tropical latitudes, only, and never from our beaches here in
Washington State. Now to be honest, it's a bit chilly to hang around one of
our beaches, and if you did, there is no guarantee of a proper sunset, so...
maybe it's there.

From the beach...once in the 28 years I've lived near the beach
in SoCal.

I never have though I've been aware of it for many years. When I was kid I
remember reading one of Adm. Daniel Gallery's books where he mentioned the
phenomenon and talked about somebody prolonging it by flying towards the sunset
at exactly the correct speed.

Many times, most often on the Midway, '80 - '83. I have seen it from the air
once, and maybe 10 or 15 times (or more?) from the Silver Strand in Coronado.
The conditions do have to be right for it to be seen.

That's interesting that you mention Silver Strand State Beach, Dave -
we've seen it there twice over the years, I suppose because of its
orientation and the wx conditions that happen there. At times of the
year where sunset is well clear of Point Loma off to the right of
sundown, lots of people go to watch the sunset.

We also used to use the "Gallery Method" when we were on Diego Garcia
in P-3s. I posted this before, I think. A CDR McKeown (sp) that we all
called 'the Major' had us flying around at about 20,000' in late
afternoon and told the crew he was trying to "catch the Green Flash".
At sunset at our altitude (obviously, sunset varies with altitude), he
was able to juggle us a few feet up and down to give everyone on board
a chance to come up to the stand behind the FE's seat and witness the
event. I don't think it took any particular skill - just patience.
The last time I saw it flying was coming out of Oman on a very sandy
day. The Negev desert and the temperature inversions were stirring up
a heat wave up at altitude that made everything a deep sepia tone.
That time, it wasn't a 'flash' - it was a sustained green-ish sunset
off the right wing. It was really weird!

Word.

But the horizon has to be razor sharp. One of the Tigers
on my last cruise got a good photo of it. We saw the flash
three days running on that trip.

I have seen twice from the deck of a boat, once in the Pacific and another
off the east coast of the U.S.

"If it exists"? We aren't talking about Bigfoot sightings - its a met
phenomenon that is occasionally photographed and you can find in
several places on the net.

It does exist.

As for the difficulty of viewing, there are several factors that must be
right all at once for the effect to be seen

1. Sharp horizon - gotta be looking across water.
2. No clouds - they block the sun.
3. No, or very little, haze - it affects the refraction.

Try looking it up yourself - we aren't homework helper. Several
people, including myself, explained the conditions under which we saw
the event. Since that isn't good enough, I'd suggest that Google is
probably your only friend. Hell, Wikipedia can educate you on the
subject, if you can spell it.

There are plenty of excellent internet sites dedicated to collected
photos, and explanations. 30 seconds of Google will give you more than
you need.
