View Full Version : soaring on screen

November 24th 06, 02:25 AM
I have started a webpage that will collect appearances of gliders in TV
programs and movies:
http://home.comcast.net/~johan.larson/soaring/onscreen.html

So far I have five movies on the list, with more to come. I know of the
following:

Escape From New York
Dawn Flight
The Sky Trap
Skyward
The Birdmen
Everybody Wants to Rule the World (music video)
Freefall: Flight 174
The Longest Day
The Boy Who Flew With Condors

I would appreciate pointers to any others you know of.

"A Bridge Too Far" has Horsa mockups, one of which rolls on its own
gear, but no flying examples.

"Saving Private Ryan" has some landed/crashed CG-4A's.

There seems to be some misunderstanding. Allow me to clarify.

This is the list of the movies I already have on the site:

The Thomas Crow Affair (Remake)
Saving Private Ryan
Wind
A Bridge Too Far
The Thomas Crown Affair (Original)
The Longest Day

This is the list of movies or TV programs I know of, but don't have
entries for yet:

> Dawn Flight
> The Sky Trap
> Skyward
> The Birdmen
> Everybody Wants to Rule the World (music video)
> Freefall: Flight 174
> The Longest Day
> The Boy Who Flew With Condors

If there are any other relevant movies I don't know of yet, please tell
me. (Of course, if you want to volunteer some screenshots, that would
be even better.)

If memory serves me correctly seem to remember an episode
of ' Banacek' (George Peppard in his pre-A team days)
being launched in a 'rocket powered' Blanik.
Are we including 'made for TV programmes on gliding
-they're are a few of those about' in the UK.

My list of films and TV shows in which gliders have appeared has grown
to 14 entries. Thanks to everyone who sent me suggestions.

The three TV movies mentioned in the title appeared in 1971, 1978, and
1980. As far as I can tell none of them made it to DVDs. If you have a
copy of any of them, presumably taped off the air, I would appreciate
hearing from you.

I already have a copy of "The Boy Who Flew With Condors". Now to figure
out how to grab some frames of it for the webpage...

I wouldn't ignore commercials either. There is the current Ameriprise
Financial commercial (which ironically portrays the active baby boomer
retirement model) that is getting quite a bit of airtime for several
months. This has some great shots of a DG 1000 (?).

Toyota pickups had a commercial ground launching a glider.

I have a UK VHS video tape (for my own use!) of most or all of this,

doubt OK. If some UK guru wants to have a go at it, feel free to email

I think that glider is either a DG500 or a DG505. I know,
nit-picking. One way or the other, a lovely ship.

I seem to recall a show on one of the Discovery Channels (Discovery, TLC,
Wings, etc.) that was about women in soaring. It featured 2 women, one who
I think held/holds the world distance record for a hang-glider and the other
a Soaring Instructor, Cindy Brickner I think. It was an hour long show.

Unfortunately the cut of the newer "Thomas Crown Affair" shown on
regular TV does not have the gliding footage. I guess they cut it to
make room for commercials.

On TV I recently say an episode of "Dukes of Hazard" where Bo and Luke
Duke are flying around in a Blanik! I believe there is even a scene
where they car launch using thier Dodge Charger

OK, thanks for mentioning that. Unfortunately there are seven seasons
of episodes, plus change, which is a lot to plow through. Do you
remember anything else about the episode?

The show is here:

I'm an AS guy so I guess it can be overlooked. At any rate, I'd love
to know why Ameritech picked Soaring.

You might well be able to set up a phone interview with the guys who
commissioned the ad and filmed it. Sounds like a good topic for an
article in Soaring.

There was a one hour show called Free Flight on the Discovery Channel
in the early 90's. It was part of a series called Equinox. It was
partly about the prototype of the ASW-24 as well as other topics. Very
interesting and enjoyable.

There was an excellent short movie produced by IMAX called Silent Sky.
I say it in the late 80's but it was produced in 1977. I've tried very
hard to find a copy. IMAX says it's not avialable on DVD or video. We
should all bug them to do that.

Yes, this project has turned up a whole bunch of orphaned works: "The
Sky Trap", "Skyward", "The Boy Who Flew With Condors". They were made,
but just aren't available now, in any form. In many cases they never
made it to video.

It is teh sux.

There is a glider aerobatic sequence in the Phish documentary (yes the
band) "Bittersweet Motel" and the 2-32 in Stormchasers is excellent.
Both are short.

Thanks, Dave. Pictures from "Bittersweet Motel" are already up on the

I remember an episode of "Baa Baa Black Sheep" (WWII Pappy Boyington
series, with Corsiars being the main stars...Robert Conrad in a
supporting role) where they used a glider to search for a Radar
ship...then the "command glider" vectored in the Corsairs to destroy
the radar ship...

They made the guy who'd experienced the most recent dead-stick landing
fly the glider... I think it looked pretty much like a 1-34...time
travel in Hollywood is abused to an extreme.

I can't offer any "vectors" to figuer out which episode, etc., etc.

What was the movie about the POW's in the Colditz Castle on the
mountain that fabricated a glider to escape in? Wasn't there a drama
AND a documentary?

James Bond MUST have flown a glider somewhere in that series...

There was a TV show in the '80's about a parapalegic girl who went on
to take flying lessons (if you call power "flying"), and (against her
parents' wishes) soloed in a Stearman...I thought the title was
"Skyward..." Short bit of two gliders zooming over the buildings in
the teen's new home town. Bette Davis was her instructor...Howard
Hessman the washed up mechanic...

Christopher Reeve and Hugh Downs have both displayed some of their
soaring skills on one off TV shows...

Wow...there's more silver screen soaring than I thought!!!

There was an episode of "Baa Baa Black Sheep" in which the Corsair
pilots found an old glider in the jungle (actually a 2-33) and one of
them took off in it and acted as a stealth air controller for an
island attack. I am not making this up.

And there was a cigarette commercial circa 1970 that featured two guys
in 1-23s taking turns doing loops as they puffed on cigarettes...

Hmm. I think I remember parachuting, but not gliding...

Hmm. Thanks for the pointer. Unfortunately, in building my page I need
to set some boundaries, or I'll quickly find myself linking to all the
thousand or so home movies on YouTube showing gliding. Since "The
Sunship Games" appears to have circulated only within the gliding
community, and has never been broadcast or released in theaters, it
doesn't really belong on my list. It would make a fine entry for a list
of films/videos specifically about gliding, though.

I've managed to find some episode lists of this show, but I don't see
any mention of a glider. Could someone who has actually seen the show
take a gander? Maybe it'll jog loose a memory or two.

John, I know you already have "The Boy Who Flew With Condors" on your

promote the sport of soaring. FYI the Disney page has a link on it to
