View Full Version : OLC North America

I know there have posts regarding the OLC. Perhaps I missed this
topic.
Anyone know how to navigate the new OLC?
All I can get is OLC Worldwide, I can't seem to make it display just
North America.
Any tricks?
Also seem to have a lot of trouble with the calendar. I have to go
back and forward to make it show results for the current day. Also the
calendar is somewhat tricky.
I really enjoy the OLC, I sure hope it is running better by next
season.

Dan,
The US link to the new OLC site is

Works OK for me... It does have a habit of reverting back to worldwide
a lot - perhaps it's not using cookies effectively?

Yes, it seems to have no "memory" for one's time zone (cookies again),
so in the USA, if it's evening, it's already tomorrow to the OLC. The
calendar app has a problem with ging back a day in this case, so the
solution is tt go back a month, then forward and all is well. I really
miss the buttons on the main meny that let you go back & forward a day
at a time.

Overall, in the last few weeks, it's gotten to the point that, for me,
it's close to the functionality of last year's. One can now click
onthe pilot's name or takeoff site and get a list of all flights for
that item. It's reall starting to get quite good.
As a software developer myself, I understand the challenge of putting
together a website such as this with a huge dynamic content. How many
of us would have volunteered to test this new version "offline" to get
the bugs out? Probably not enough to really wring it out. So they did
the next best thing, and just "forced" it on us and we had to suffer a
little through the growing pains.
What is critical to making this a better product is good problem
reporting by the users back to the developers. And unfortunately, it
seems this forum is the only obvious place to do that at this time. I
see nothing on the OLC website for user feedback. This shoud be an
open forum such as SeeYou has. Users can post their wishes and
troubles openly. Then the developers should reply in a timely fashion.
But at the same time other users can perhaps offer solutions, or just
chime in with "me too", so the problem or feature is identified as
popular.

You can get a list of all flights by pilot or by club, but the list
doesn't have any information about the flights except the date.
Certainly there must be a way to list some information about the
flights, such as OLC points or distance?

Yes, and I used it on occasion.

thanks Wayne,
This did take me to the USA site, but I can't get the calendar to work
correctly on the proper date.
Any suggestions?

I can't get the calendar to work _at all_ now. I've tried it in both
IE and Firefox, same result. In IE, there is a message in the Status
line at the bottom of the screen which says "Done, but with errors on
page." When you double click on the error icon, a message box comes up
which gives data on two errors, or the same one twice. I can't copy
the text and paste it, so I'll try to reproduce it correctly here:
LIne: 63
Char: 1
Error: 'Calendar' is undefined
Code: 0
URL: http://www3.onlinecontest.org/olc-2.0/gliding/olcscore.html?
country=US
The second error is the same, except it is at Line: 360 and Char: 4
This renders OLC completely useless to me, as the default brings up the
calendar date as today, and in the US, nobody's flying yet. I can't go
back to look at previos days, even if I first select Worldwide as the
area of interest.
Are you OLC guys awake? Do you test any of this stuff?

Yes, I'm seeing the same thing both last night and just now when I
checked. They obviously upgraded something and broke it in the
process. I found a workaround to at least let me see the flight I
posted by:
1. Clicking on "Scoring"
2. Then on "Statistics: Club"
3. Finding my club and clicking on it
4. Clicking on "i" for the entry of the flight I posted
Like I said, I was able to see the flight I wanted to see. I wasn't of
course able to get to the list of the flights for another day though.
So it may not help for what you were wanting.
Later!

Yup - it's broken now. I click on the calendar and nothing happens.
Was working for me on Sunday morning....
As I said in a previous post, there is no feedback forum on the OLC
site itself, so we need to use the next best thing and post our
troubles here. But... please don't give up on the product. When it
works it's a fantastic way to document and share our flights.
So if you have troubles, take the time to document exactly what you
wanted to do and how you went about it. Perhaps some other user can
then help - or one of the OLC developers will see the post.

A workaround is to use this URL, and just change the date to what you want:
http://www3.onlinecontest.org/olc-2.0/gliding/olcscore.html?date=2006/12/10

this link seems to work (for now).
Lets see; All I have to change from Worldwide to North America and
then I have to go back and forth to the proper date.
oh yeah!........easy!.......no, more like frustrating.
This is what I was doing last week, this week this didn't work at all.
Why is it changing all the time?
Like I said before, I sure hope they get the bugs worked out before the
next season really gets cranking.

You certainly *can* feedback to the development team directly, I got a
reply on the calendar bug within one hour, stating the programmer was
en route home and would fix it. It worked soon thereafter.
To ask questions or report problems, click on the HELP tab at bottom
left on every page viewed. You will see the tabs "Imprint" "Search"
"Print" and "Help"... click on HELP
(URL:
http://www3.onlinecontest.org/olc-2.0/gliding/plainJsp.html?prefix_jsp=help
)
A large FAQ is shown, and above it the words:
(start quote)
answered by OLC-administrator Johannes Niesslbeck (AC München) last
update December 5th 2006
Please read the FAQ first, only if Your problem is not mentioned there,
write a Mail to: (end quote)
So to ask a question, click on the email address link. And each country
has a volunteer coordinator you can also email for help, Doug Haluza
for the USA, Tony Firmin for Canada.
A modest suggestion to all.... please be patient and understanding of
this large scale international volunteer effort. They had to get it up
for the start of the 2007 contest year to capture your flight logs in
the new database format, that had to be Priority One. Getting correct
outputs was obviously secondary in importance and they are chugging
away at it and many outputs are working now. The Google Earth output is
a very nice tool, and will not be seen as a frill once you see your own
flights in it.
Think of all the issues they have in hosting a worldwide audience of
Type A's like us, all the languages, every time zone, everything new
and everything volunteer. And keep the old system up for a while too by
the way.
Wish them well, congratulate their successes, ignore the little bugs
for now for soon they will be gone.
I am not part of that team, I just think they need our support and not
so much of our gripes. This is for fun.
All the best!

Maybe the Germans should stick to things they are good at (like making
sailplanes and luxury cars) and hand software development over to
someone who knows what they're doing (like the Slovenians or Indians?)

Like e.g. SAP or Suse Linux. You should better talk of something you
have some clue about.

OK, still works fine for me on IE XP Pro.
Did you try clicking HELP on the OLC page? Same problem? You can never
get to any of the Help pages? or the FAQ even?
Email your issue to:
I suggest telling them your browser name and version, Windows or Mac
version etc.
I doubt you are the only one with the issue and they may have a
suggestion.
Since it's a work in progress, try again later, you may 'catch' them in
mid-fix.
Doubtless they are using bleeding edge software and since there is a
varety of browsers and not everyone keeps theirs updated, they are
going to draw out every bug in every browser and PC setup out there.
The 'old days' of plain old HTML are gone, and the fancy new stuff can
cause grief.

Hi Bob!
Same problem with ie 7.0.5730.11 and firefox 2.0 just a few minutes ago.
For exactly the reasons you give below, the OLC used old fashioned plain
HTML in the past. I tried to ensure that the complete functionality of
the interface was available even with the most paranoid settings of the
browser recommend by "Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik".
Best Regards

Hans,
I just used Firefox with no issues, except it seemed slower to get
going.
You will likely guess that tech support would suggest there is
something on your PC which needs to be updated (Java maybe?), if others
with IE and Firefox can use the site, but I guess there is a chance
something in their code draws out a bug only on certain PC's.
Aren't their sites which will audit a given URL for correct code? I'll
look for one for fun later.
Today the country and date selection seems to be working just fine. But
only for 'Daily Score'. 'Champion' seems to work for USA, but for other
countries it shows all competitors or Worldwide I guess. This seems to
be taking a while to get the country filter working in all scoring
modes. Why teh uSA works and others do not is also odd.
But, it's winter here, and I'd rather have a good excuse NOT to look at
the nice flights in the southern hemiospehere! ;-)
Best!
Bob

I know I can send a private query by this mechanism, but it doesn't
help the "community", as there is no open sharing of problems AND
SOLUTIONS, as we see in this forum.
Also, it's much easier to add a "me too" or "works for me" to a thread
in order to get a better picture of how things are working. The
perfect example is the problem Hans is having, yet you and I can indeed
get to the FAQ.
Many people are embarrassed by their computer skills, so just assume
the problem is an operator error. By exposing these issues openly, the
developers will no doubt get an order of magnitude increase in reports
and feedback.

Bob!
everything works fine, as long as I start at www.onlinecontest.org. But
as soon as I follow only your link I get the strange error message. So I
don't think it has something to do with the hard- or software in my
computer.
Best Regards

Hans,
AHA!
Today I get the same problem as you....."An error has occurred....."
So, "flakey" it remains!
There must be something set in 'previous' pages which mess up a jump
directly to this URL. Maybe there is no guarantee anymore that a given
URL will generate the same response in other conditions or for other
users.
Something learned......
Bob
And, to Tom, yes, use this forum to spread the word on bugs detected,
it may reduce frustration in others to know their grief is shared by
others. The HELP link was for those who could not find a way to
communicate to the developers.
