View Full Version : Are Garmin SL 30 really this good?

I really want an SL30 Nav/Com for my 601XL for several reasons. I've
been looking around and I can get a non-installed with wiring harness
for around 3 AMUs. What surprises me is that used ones are selling on
e-bay for just about the same amount.

What is an "AMU"?

Aviation Monetary Unit. It's equal to ten C-notes and sometimes called
a "grand" by the land bound.

Sorry, you must be new around here. An AMU is an Aviation Monetary Unit
which equals $1000. :)

About the only things better are the all in one GPS/NAV/COM boxes..
thats why the folks selling these things 2nd hand are getting such good
$$$ for them.

And the GNS480 is the best of both worlds. The NAV/COM inside is the
same guts as the SL/30. The SL/30 is the slickest NAV/COM I've
ever used. In addition to digital radial and automatic ID you can:

1. Listen to one COM and monitor the one in the flipflop.
2. Navigate to one on the external CDI and use the internal

Very clean and easy to understand

You've hit on the reasons I want one. The 601XL has a small panel. The
SL30 for all practical purposes gives me 2 radios and two Navs. Add to
that is is the only NAV that will work with the Dynon EFIS's HSI I'm
putting in and there you have it. As a bonus it is slim.

As for the 480 it will make a nice upgrade some day. :)
