This is cool! You wouldn't think anything that big could survive the

It looked like the pilot kicked out the crab as he touched down so the
forces may not have been all that extreme. That think must have one
massive set of landing gear anyway given its weight.

Looks like the same place they did the 777 tests.
Anyone know where this was shot?

For more, go to youtube.com, and search with "crosswind" or "crosswind
landing" for a great selection of short films.
I remember many times landing on commercial flights into Monterey CA
back in the 70's... the plane was quite often hugely sideways coming in
over the ocean, and those in the right seats could look almost straight
down the runway until the pilot kicked out the crab. It was most fun
when there were newbies on the flight... watching their faces turn
white like mine did the first time :-) What worried people was that I
swear they would turn up the cabin music during landing, as if they
were trying to hide the engine noises. Hee hee.

I remember hearing that the 777 tests were done at some airport in
Brazil, where the winds are known for giving x-winds like this
consistently, but I honestly don't know about the credibility of that
source or whether there were other tests done elsewhere.

This is indeed by far the best collection I've seen on the Net, and
it's all the more amazing that it's free (since hardly anything
worthwhile is free any more these days on the Net).

I'm not exactly familiar with icelandic, so I couldn't comment on the
language.

You sure have no idea how to either block ads or how to finance a website.

hmm, why do you spamvertise this site? Because your bandwidth is for free
(read: paid for by others)?
and I don't want to bring back your potential copyright problems. You are
aware of it and you can never say that you haven't been warned (no Mr.
Judge, I had absolutely no idea that copyright also applies on the 'net).

The mbl.is sign at the end shows that this was shot at Keflavik
airport, BIKF, in Iceland and in a 35-45 kt crosswind, the ideal
situation for the test in question.
The 777 was crosswind tested at BIKF as well.
And yes, the language in the shot is Icelandic and it was a news story
on the Mbl.is website.

I do not know how Danish could possibly help here, Icelandic is
completely unitelligible to speakers of that language.

You're such an idiot, Martin, er, sorry, Merry Christmas!
Of course I tell pilots about the page, you moron, er, sorry, Merry
Christmas! Everyone here knows that the bandwidth for the videos is
provided, free of charge, by this group's own Jav Henderson, and I
simply provide the springboard for it.
Airmen on this group deserve to know that they don't have to subject
themselves to incessant ads (as in YouTube, and many others) in order
to view excellent aviation videos. It's a service that -- because we
DON'T advertise it -- needs to be announced here once in a while.
Merry Christmas!

Hey, my videos are also available for free. Not quite as extensive as
Jay's though, but I also got the fun of shooting them too.
http://www.alioth.net/Video - MP4 format, get VLC from
http://www.videolan.org (also free and a VERY good video player) if you
don't have an MP4 player.

according to the file name, it's in iceland (or Island as they spell it
there), making that Keflavik airport. I pride myself on having lived in

I spent 6 months of the summer of 1960 flying P-2V Neptunes from the
airbase at Keflavik. Back again for 6 weeks in 1962. The men of Iceland
really detested our presence there since after WWII, the American Armed
Forces had carried off (married) 80% of their eligible women, in fact,
our squadron Flight Surgeon married Miss Iceland of 1959, a real beauty.

Did those eligible women consent, or were they kidnapped? In the
former case, what's to detest?

They would do anything to get off that rock. This left most of the
Icelandic men batchelors. I'm sure that they thought that we had
raped and pillaged their country.

It's not the fault of the U.S. that they live on a worthless rock.

Bob,
that is really cool :)
I'd like to visit as an adult (and maybe bring back a nice Icelandic
girl :P)
>From what i remember about it, Iceland is a very strange place.
1) everything is expensive as hell (country barely produces anything
except fish and wool, so nearly everything consumer-related is
imported)
2) the island is about the size of kentucky, with just about as much to
do. (no offense to the State of Kentucky, or Iceland, but you can see
just about everything in both during the course of two weeks)
3) its an average of about 7C year round (like 6C all summer and 8C all
winter)
4) those miniature ponies (they're just weird)

How is this different from the US, where nearly all consumer-related
goods come from China?

They don't have a lot of choice where as in the US we do.
But we chose poorly.
We the consumer made the choice by demanding ridiculously
cheap goods no matter what the 'cost' was to get it.
The corporations supplying the goods complied with our
request by importing them from cheap labor elsewhere.
Now, as a consumer, I can't go into a store and find a
product I like and demand to buy the Made in USA version.
I either buy the foreign made item or I do without.
In a sense we've painted ourselves into a corner.

If you look closely, it appears that he loses a tire on the second
landing. Wish the image were larger.
