I'm thinking about a pulse oximeter. I've seen both Nonin and
CheckMate units for sale, with Checkmate being noticably cheaper.
Anyone have any experience with either? Is there a good reason to pay
more for the Nonin?

Nonin is like Dave Clark. Its "The" name in the medical industry for
pulse-oximetry.. them and NellCor.
Good quality product, but if you dont have a Cadillac budget, then the
Checkmate will do just fine.
I have my own Nonin fingtertip pulseox and use it every day (at work,
medically, more often than flying) and it holds up to the use. But if it
breaks and I had to replace it, I would likely go with price over name.

It's been a while since you posted about your problems. What was the
resolution on the issues with the G1000 installation and it's modifications?
