View Full Version : Are flight engineers qualified to fly?

In older aircraft that require flight engineers, are these flight
engineers qualified to fly the aircraft in an emergency? If not, what
qualifications do they have? Do they have to be pilots (i.e.,
licensed)?

Define "qualified".
Passed a check ride in the pilot seat of that aircraft? no, Maybe not
Normally you may have been a FE working towards that FO seat and then Capt.

Qualified to fly in other aircraft... most likely..
get this one down in a pinch if both pilots got sick? most likely

Do they "have" to be "licensed" pilots? no

Well, Mxsmanic, they're usually the most senior, most qualified member
of the crew. They're basically the "admiral" of the flight, so to
speak, and they're the top of the chain of command.

Pretty wild, eh?

Hmmm, on the other end of the age bracket is(was)n't there an age
requirement that the FE had to be 21 but the FO only had to be 18? I'm
harking back to the days when FE's were the norm aboard airliners.

In an emergency, does someone have to be a pilot to fly an aircraft?

Didn't you see "Snakes on a Plane?"

I figured that for your wildest fantasy!

Well, legally allowed and/or actually able to fly the aircraft (i.e.,
having pilot training in the aircraft or something).

I guess the question is gradually becoming moot as aircraft with
flight engineers disappear. It looks like a rather dreary job,
although perhaps on early aircraft that were more finicky it wasn't.

No, but some minimal level of competence is required, even if it is
only the ability to push buttons today.

No.

You should see it. You will especially enjoy the ending.

See the movie.

MX's part was played by Keenan Thompson of "All That" and Saturday Night Live
fame.

A lot of cargo haulers are still flying older planes with FE's. I asked
a friend what he did as a FE on 747. He said "everything". All the
pilots have to do is point the plane, the FE takes care of all the
engine management, pressurization, etc. Today much of that is automated
but I'm sure not a single crew would argue that a FE would be really
helpful in an emergency to take care of the systems while the pilots
focus on flying and communicating.

Did you hear about the Continental pilot who died at the controls. Pax
reported that the first officer came over the intercom and asked if
there were any pilots on the flight (probably to help with radios).
Mxsmanic could have solved the problem for them. I believe there is a
setting that controls how likely emegencies are.
