Depends: King is better if you need a cure for insomnia and want to learn
a bunch of hokey expressions, Sportys is better if you want to learn how
to fly an airplane in the clouds.

I have not watched the King's IFR course but the Sporty's version
put me to sleep as well. As much as I tried, I fell asleep within 15
to 20 minutes into each segment.

Wow, I thought it was only me. It took me by surprise because when I
bought the series, I was really excited to watch it. After repeated
attempts, I fell asleep in 15-20 minutes EVERY single time.

I bought King ever since. The Kings' quirkiness actually helps in
remembering the material and is clearly not by accident.

I prefer King. They are way corny and all but it's all for increased
educational value. I think their DVDs are better training tools. The
material is what is pretty sleepy. It's much more fun to actually go
out and do it.

So obviously, it's whatever works best for you.

What year did you guys buy those courses?
The most recent version of Sporty's IFR course is a lot different than a
couple of years ago.

I bought the King course years ago when I did my IFR training. If you
can stand X hours of Martha King (halfway through I wasn't sure I
could) then their course is pretty well laid out. Like others have
mentioned here, after 20 minutes or so, I was getting the nods and
would have to go back & review

About 7 years ago now in 2000. I bought Richard Collins' entire series
since then and have been happy with that but the Private Pilot Course
was the sleeping agent.

Isn't that weird? Same here. Plus the pilots I talked to at work said
the same thing... that the various training tapes made them sleepy.
Yet we can watch detailed shows on many other subjects without dozing
off. Perhaps it's because it's like drinking from a fire hose, as the
old saying goes. Too much, too fast.

I used the King for the PPL knowledge test back in 2002. It was pretty
hokey, but it got the job done just fine. I found that the book with all
the questions (and answers) that came with the videos was actually more help
for study purposes than the videos.
