El Dorado Arkansas got some incredible news yesterday. So if you have kids
in school you might want to think about moving here.

Yes, it really is. As someone with a 9th grade student in the school I'm
happy as a clam. There really has been time for it to sink in around town
the amazing affect this could have here.

So if anyone knows of any businesses that are looking for a place to move to
or to set up shop send me a note.

When did you live in El Dorado?

It's a small world isn't it. KDMS/KLBQ are now clients of mine.

I worked at the guys across town, KELD in 78-79.

KDMS is gospel now and KLBQ is top 40.

The guys across town now have 4 or 5 stations operating and they are
everything Rock, two Country, Talk and Urban.

Well this one is being set up in a way that the donor won't have any say now
that the endowment is made. The school board thought about just this sort of
thing.

Good, but I was thinking more about the way the scholarship bequest
changed Philomath, which was once a little mill town outside another
little town that was the site of the state ag college.

There were other, more important factors behind the change in the
town's character, and the change in itself may be a good thing. But
many people did make the bequest one of the factors that decided them
on Philomath, and that led to more growth and greater mainstreaming
than some of the old-timers expected.

Be careful what you wish for.

No relation to the soap. Oil refining, exploration and sales.

And we would really like to see what a little unrestrained growth was like.
El Dorado has lost over 10000 in population over the last 20 years and it
has been close to impossible to recruit new industry to the area.

And just so there is some aviation content in this thread I started.

We have two airports owned by the city and with the exception of the
occasional Murphy Jet it isn't unusual to not hear an airplane at either one
on the weekend.

Damn it, that sounds like a lot of airports across the country
nowadays...

Around here, the hope is that ethanol (which is currently driving the
price of corn to record highs) will power the farm economy back into
good times. I'll tell you what, it would be nice to see some wealthy
farmers buying some airplanes around here...

Yes, I had to laugh when the article essentially suggested that the
timber company should be proud that its education support had so
"enlightened" the community that they no longer thought the timber
industry was something that should be supported.

That is a fantastic guesture from a private company. but one has to wonder
why a country so wealthy needs to rely on private generosity to educate its
young. When I went to Uni 25 years ago here in Oz it was free to all. Later
govts have since made it a pay later system ( you pay extra income tax only
when you have a job above x$ year unitl you pay back the fees that
represent about 20% of the real cost).Current govt is doing their damdest to
bring back pay before you go fees. Going backwards in my opinion. Of course
one big difference here as that pretty much all Universities are govt
owned.

Could it be that the current system in the US has created the greatest
university system in the world and people from all over the world come
here to learn? There are a tremendous amount of scholarships available
and if your smart enough your not likely to be unable to go to college.
Any one can go to school here, not just those who are ranked highly
on standard tests. You may not be able to attend Harvard but you can go
to school somewhere. Is this true in OZ?

You certainly have some great universities in terms of research output,
Nobel prize winners, etc but the real measure of a University system, in
my humble opinion should primarily be based on the quality of its
undergraduate teaching and the accessibility to ordinary people with the
appropriate ability. Can anyone attend a school in Oz? I assume you mean
college or University, the answer is generally no because we usually have a
quota for each course with an academic standard based on supply and demand,
but it is heading in the direction of the US where anyone with the money
will be able to get in regardless of their aptitude. The end result I think
is that you end up with lower standards and degree qualified hamburger
flippers. Next thing we will be having scholarships for illiterate football
players and then I'll know our system has been stuffed
Anyways I didnt really want to get into a political debate, this is
rec.aviation afterall.

Not at all. A civilised society needs educated people in all fields. It
cant function without doctors , teachers engineers etc etc. You educate
people and they go on to make important contributions to society and of
course pay tax. It just happens that some jobs require University training.
You know it is funny that no one ever argues about the taxpayer footing the
bill for someone to go to the police academy to be trained or to ( back to
aviation) an airforce pilot to be trained to fly but people expect a teacher
to pay for his own training which happens to be in University ( and then
work for peanuts doing an essential role for the community after that).
Where is the logic there? It certainly is parasitism ( by society not the
teacher ). A smart society will fill its Universities with smart people,
not rich people.
A previous poster commented about the US system pumping out graduates that
cant read.
I note one George Dubbya is a graduate of both Yale and Harvard.... say no
more.
