View Full Version : FSS phone numbers in all states

M[_1_]
January 24th 07, 05:00 AM
I just realize that this information might be useful and I re-posted
under a new subject, so it'll be easier to search.

Credits: the original list came from
http://www.4innovation.biz/fss.txt, and someone posted on the
grumman-gang mailing list while back. I sorted the list by states.
Most of time I know the state that I'm in, but I don't necessarily know
the name of the FSS closest to me if I'm traveling :-)

True but you'll get who you get.

With the new system, as often as not, I get ABQ and not Prescott, AZ even
though I'm only a couple hours south of Prescott.

Somtimes it's handy to know the local numbers if you have a question
regarding something very location specific. Like asking about dropping in
to say hi.

Or if you need to phone to close your flight plan. If I call from my cell
phone, I get my local FSS. If I'm somewhere covered by another FSS, it's
better to call them directly.

Forgot to clarify. If you're on a cellphone, like most of people these
days, you'll likely to get to the FSS nearest to your cellphone's
"home" area, even when you're half way across the country.

That's why the local direct number.

Just incase you did not know. If yor call 1-800-WX-BRIEF on your cell phone,
you will get the FSS for your cell phone's area code. For example, if I'm in El
Paso and I call 1-800-WX-BRIEF on my cell phone I will not be talking to
Albuquerque FSS, I'll be talking to the guys back home (McAlester FSS in
Oklahoma)

I carry a list like this one on my PDA, just incase.

You can close your flight plan with anybody and anybody can give you
a weather briefing. However, the FSS's closer to where you are (rather
than where your cell phone implies) probably understand the local
weather and NOTAMS better.

I have to use Leesburg to file FRZ plans.

There is a webpage on the FAA site with a list of telephone numbers, but
I do not have the URL handy.

A reason for carrying such a list is when traveling across the border.
When you want to come back, the 800-may not work from where you are
calling. You will want to call the FSS closest to your destination to
obtain US Customs telephone numbers so you can contact them directly
with your arrival information.

This information is already included in the Airport/Facility Directory.
A very handy little tome, well worth the price.

Does anyone know if there is a A/FD formated for use on a palm top device?

Download the file, make the appropriate modifications and download it to
your palm device. You know how to do this. It takes maybe five minutes,
depending on how much you want to reformat it.

I know that but I was wondering if anyone was doing the formating already.

You'll need a Windows device, a Palm would gag.

I think this varies by cell carrier. Presently I have Verizon with a
So-Cal area code (760) -- but I always end up being connected to the
Prescott, AZ Flight Service. I seem to recall that with my prior cell
provider (T-Mobile) the call would route properly to the San Diego FSS.

I thought that FSS preferred you to close the flight plan with the FSS
that covers your destination? They always give me a specific FSS to close
with; I thought it was at best a hassle if you called a different one.

I thought they were supposed to be fixing that problem.. ship you to the
nearest available FSS based on the Cell Grid you call in on, not on your
cell phone area code.

The facility specific toll free numbers are in the AF/D. Not a very
convenient organization but they are there in the back.

There are many lists available. From AOPA, I keep this list of FSS numbers
on my PDA and on my eFlyBook and in printed form:
http://flighttraining.aopa.org/members/flight_bag/pdfs/fss.pdf

and this list of ATC numbers:

http://flighttraining.aopa.org/members/flight_bag/pdfs/atc.pdf

Even if you have no PDF capable device in the plane and you don't buy an
AF/D, you could print them.

Google for "FSS phone numbers" brought up many web pages with the numbers
listed.

In HTML but could be printed:

http://www.avweather.com/afss.html

Or this one with a pretty, cloud background:

http://pad39a.com/gene/fss.html

Or this one

http://www.bakercityairport.com/LocalFSS.htm

Or this one

I attend a FAA safety meeting today and one of the speaker was from the
McAlester AFSS. She talked about the rollout of the FS21 system
http://www.afss.com/news/. The FSS's will be closed and consolidate into the
hubs start on the east coast and move west across the country. The McAlester
AFSS will close 14 May 2007 and it functions move to the Fort Worth hub. It
seems to me that by May all FSS phone numbers east of Oklahoma will be
disconnected. In May I'll be forced to used 1-800-WX-BRIEF (992-7433).

I went to http://www.afss.com/ and did not see any of the great services that
Lockheed Martin said they would provide. The front page was last updated
10/4/2006 9:15:27 AM. Lockheed Martin doesn't seem to be keeping us informed.
