View Full Version : Seeking twice monthly air ride between N. San Diego area and Bakersfield CA
January 31st 07, 09:41 AM
I'm a little fearful of small planes; my dad had one and he was a real
amateur and showoff. We had some close calls with death when I was a
child and I haven't been up in a small plane since those years.
But I drive between the north San Diego area and Bakersfield Ca about
twice a month and am falling asleep at the wheel. I can't take chances
anymore. So I'm trying to find someone with their own plane who makes
this flight or who would like to make such a flight once or twice a
month with no definite continuous commitments.
My dad had a hard time finding company to fly with him and I don't
know if that's a common difficulty, but if you find it to be true for
you and would like some company and fly this route, I would learn to
enjoy the ride. (My son is starting pilot lessons in LA but he won't
have a plane for some time).
Anyway, I would be happy to pay for the gas if it's not too awfully
high, but I can't afford charter rates.
I'm female, 51, balanced conversation and a good listener. I'm a
private tutor and I go back and forth to tutor students.
Email for my contact information if you might be interested in trying
a trip with me.

There is a website devoted to pairing up pilots and people willing to share
the flight. Try here:

The FAA prevents pilots from providing charter service without
complying with Part 135 regulations. They are permitted to carry
passengers on flights THAY are planning, or on flights of which there
is a commonality of purpose. In such cases, the maximum compensation
paid by passengers is limited to a share of the expense of the flight
(fuel, aircraft rental fee, landing fee) commensurate with the number
of occupants in the aircraft; thus the maximum compensation permitted
by regulation for a flight by a pilot and a single passenger is 50% of
the flight expenses.
Your best bet, is to heir a flight instructor to transport you (while
providing instruction if you choose), or perhaps:

How long will you be staying in Bakersfield on a typical trip?

Something about this post just seems fishy to me. Is it just me?

Reading between the lines, I'm guessing the OP definitely got some
subconcious enjoyment from flying with her father and I'm guessing further
that since she now has a son taking flying lessons, the interest is
rekindled and she has established a pragmatic excuse to get into a small
plane again.
I at least see nothing fishy.

It must be the fact that a woman is publicly disclosing her age. :-)

Good point... Obviously it is a trap by the FAA to trick one of us into
getting compensation for a flight so that they can Hoover us...

It's probably about a 185 nm from San Diego to Bakersfield (depending
upon which airports you are using and what detours ATV might inflict
upon you... Probably 1.5-2 hours depending upon the winds and aircraft
crusing speed, vs about a 4-4.5 hour drive... A quick check over at one
of the flight schools in the San Diego area ended with aircraft rental
rates of $80, $95, and $125 for a C-152, C-172, and new model C-172
respectively... Instructors rent for $45 per hour... If the instructor
can't wait around for you, you're looking at around $500 just to get
there... Of course the kicker is that you'll probably arrive there
quicker in the C-152 than you would with a commercial flight since I
believe that all of the commercial flights go through LAX and take at
least 3 hours to get from San Diego to Bakersfield... Even if you rented
an instructor and aircraft for a one-way flight, it's not totally out of
line pricewise considering what some of the flights from San Diego to
Bakersfield are going for...

If you find you are having to detour around ATVs, may I suggest a slightly
higher altitude?
;O)

ROTFLMAO!
Interesting how close the 'V' and 'C' keys are on the keyboard and how
that one slight mistake really changes the meaning of the statement...
And the humor of it, of course... Good catch...

People who offer rides on that site (or those who answer requests for
rides) run being found in violation of the Part 135 rules. The FAA
has already issued years ago an opinion to that effect on a previous
ride sharing referral bulletin board.

As soon as the government approves her travel plans, now that we have no
freedom.
