This is another snapshot Dad took in Alaska
during the war. The letters on the plane's fuselage
look like GF-ATS, so I'm guessing that this is
somewhere near the Canadian section of the
AlCan Highway.

Thanks! "Fairchild" was the clue I needed to track
down this plane. It appears to be a Fairchild 71-C.
This particular plane has its own web page:
http://www.ualberta.ca/EDMONTON/CONTRIB/airmuseum/aamfairchild.html
CF-ATZ flew from 1933 to 1949, then crashed on Lake
Aristofats, NWT (with the death of the pilot and one
passenger; three other passengers survived). The wreck
was recovered in 1980 and restored.

It would feel kinda odd to fly a plane that
someone else died in.

Probably not any different than jumping skydiving gear which the
previous owner had been killed wearing. :-))

Lots of bomber crews have done it.
I'm not sure if this aircraft was restored to flight, or if it was
put in the museum (the web site belongs to the Alberta
Aviation Museum in Edmonton).

I just received this e-mail from John Stephens at bushplane.com:
"Bill:
"Thank you for the photo. I have added it to our online database
collection of photos as #cbhc0663. This collection can be viewed
at http://www.bushplane.com
"The aircraft in the photo was actually a Fairchild 91C. This aircraft
was built in 1933 and servied with Canadian Airways before being
sold to Territorial Air Service in 1941. It crashed in 1949 and was
salvaged in 1981. Restored, it is now on display at the
Alberta Aviation Museum."
