Looks to me the guy taxiing this F/A-18 from VFA-137, NAS Lemoore, is a
Commander (shiny silver leaf on the shoulder). If so, what's the name of
the Chief Warrant Officer painted on the fuselage mean?
Aircraft was enroute to Key West for a stint of Top Gun training.

Okay, makes sense to me. Here's the whole image uncropped.
But then, who is the guy whose name is painted on the landing gear panel?
What does AN MONTELEONE from BALTIMORE MARYLAND do?
What's the difference between a crew chief and a plane captain?

Might seem like dumb questions but I was in the Army and we didn't have dumb
questions, only questions that we needed answered.
Thanks, Tom

More precisely: the name of the Crew Chief is painted on this side (the
left), that of the pilot on the other. The CC is the "owner" of the aircraft
and always takes care of the same bird, but despite his name being on the
aircraft the Pilot rarely flies his "own" bird.

The pilot's name is on the left side. Normal numbering would be CAG-210,
CO-211, XO-212.etc....... in order of seniority. The name on the nose
landing gear door is the Plane Captain (Air Force, Army, and Marines have
Crew Chiefs). There is probably another name on the left side for a second
Plane Captain from the Line Division (if your name is on the aircraft, you
will work a little extra taking care of it). The name on the right side of
the canopy is usually the name of the someone who is not a pilot (Flight
Surgeon, Maintenance Control Officer, Maintenance Chief). CWO Steiner is
probably the squadron "Gunner" (Ordnance Officer).

Thanks for clarifying things Mike. I'm just an old Army tanker and was
making a WAG.

I was a Gunner CWO in VA-164 back in the early '70's.
My name and rank was painted on the starboard side of one of our aircraft.
It's an honorary sort of thing. It recognizes the ground pounder officers
in the squadron.

Actually, a CWO4 (Chief Warrant Officer) is probably the division officer
for one of the maintenance divisions in the squadron. The names at the
cockpit are squadron officers. Starting with the first side number, usually
the 00 bird is the Air Wing Commander, the 01 is the squadron Commanding
Officer etc. If they put different names on each side, they can get all of
the officers regardless if they're pilots or not.
