Hughes Racer down

There was a very extensive article about the repro Hughes H-1/1B Racer in
the May '03 issue of Air & Space. Jim Wright was the owner who spent over
$1million and 35,000 hours building it.

Well, it's just been reported that a Hughes H-1 has crashed in Yellowstone
Park, killing the lone pilot who was on his way back from Oshkosh to Oregon.
The pilot wasn't identified in the accident report yet, but the registration
WAS reported to be in the name of Jim Wright, the subject of the Air & Space
article.

Beyond the sad loss of life, it's an even worse loss considering that the
"exact" repro was itself a reproduction of a one-of-a-kind aircraft.

Rick, it's been confirmed, it was Jim Wright flying the airplane and
both he and the airplane are lost.

Jim Wright was one of the very best of the best of people in the
world, the recreation of the airplane was his dream as it was the
dream of the rest of the people who built it with him.

I had the extreme pleasure of knowing the man and will always chreish
the memory of the time I was able to spend with him at Cottage Grove,
Reno and at the Nellis Air Show in Las Vegas last year.

A one of a kind airplane, a one of a kind man.

Very Sad Loss !

I was setting on the flight line when Jim landed the Hughes Racer at Oshkosh.
I have several photos of the plane and it was a beautiful aircraft. This is a
great loss to the flying community.

My prayers are with the family.
