I've started WikiProject_Gliding at Wikipedia, and would like to
invite others to join it, even if you are new to Wikipedia.
WikiProjects are used to help editors work together in a subject area.
The initial scope of this project is deliberatly broad and covers
aviation as well as avifauna, meterology, geography and biography. The
project is described in more detail at the home page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Gliding

The first task of the project is to get glider pilots to upload images
and add them to appropriate articles. Since it's northern winter, this
is a great time for pilots to go through their photo collections
looking for suitable images that they can share. For some ideas on how
to apply images to articles, have a look at the pages in the following
list:

Avifauna:

Aviation:

Biography:

Geography:

Meterology:

We especially need pictures of notable glider pilots for their
biographies. See the list at:

There is more information on the list of things to do at the
WikiProject Gliding talk page now. See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Gliding#Things_to_do

The list currently contains:

* Requests: Upload images, especially aerial photography and link
to appropriate articles
* Merge: List of glider manufacturers into List of gliders
* Cleanup: Add proper citations to articles about gliding
* Expand:List of notable glider pilots (see red-links at Soaring
Hall of Fame)
* Stubs: Create or expand airport stubs for airports with glider
operations
* Other: Add refs and scanned images from FAA Glider Handbook

Please sign-up for a Wikipedia account and join the project.

IMHO, the free online Wiki encyclopedia and the Wiki dictionary are
creations of genius.

What I like is the simple explanations of quite complex things, with
links for further study.
I use it quite a lot and have even put in a couple of entries myself,
although not about gliding, yet (that threat is to come!)

I would hops that what we may do for gliding and other airsports will
stick to that way of doing things,
bearing in mind that most first readers will not be specialists in the
field.

The annual IGC Plenary meeting is at FAI HQ next week and this project
might be worth a mention there
because Wiki is available worldwide.
