Ya think there'd be this much fuss if it had been a C-172?

Probably not. 172 pilots are allowed to be stupid enough to underestimate
their fuel requirements. Airlines are supposed to have all sorts of checks
and balances besides the pilots in order to avoid that situation altogether.
Was there actually a fuel leak on this plane? Or did someone at AA screw up?

My response to a controller who tries to give me something I do not want
in situation like this would be, "What part of the word EMERGENCY do you
not understand?"

"American Airlines said the emergency declaration resulted from a bad valve
causing false readings on the fuel gauges in the cockpit."

Indeed... I can't believe the pilot let the controller bully him into
taking a different course of action.

Any-one who endangers an aircraft I am flying or a flight crew I am
part of in the reported manner would be talking to the relevent
authorities as to how he should keep his job !
