Would anybody know what, if any, import fees/taxes are to be paid on a new
german build glider imported into USA?
Would one have to pay German VAT on top of factory price?

There is a small duty on the trailer, none on the glider.

No.

No on both counts. Civil aircraft are exempted from duty
restrictions.

If you are working with a dealer like Eastern, they should provide you
with detailed instructions on properly filling out the customs
paperwork and recommend a customs broker. Other than the hassle of
paperwork, it was pretty painless.

It cost us about $300 using Barthco through Port of Wilmington in
03.

Thank you for info.
As I fly gliders in Europe would anybody know if there is an option to keep
a glider on an "N" number in Europe for a while (year or two)?
Is there an inspection required before getting a registration? Does it has
to be here in the US or can one be done in Europe?

You need an inspection to obtain an airworthiness certificate for the
N number - mine is a Standard for a 27B. I cannot speak to the
process for an Experimental.

I don't know if there is an issue with flying with an N number in
Europe. I saw a few N registered GA aircraft on British airports. A
work associate who flies in the UK (power) mentioned something about
using them for US instrument ratings which was cheaper than in the UK.
That was a couple of years ago and since the UK is not in the Euro
zone, it may may not be relevant to your situation.

I'd speak with the US and local agents for your ship who should be in
a better position to answer your questions. There could be other
issues like taxes if you don't ship it out immediately.

Definitely recommend Barthco for handling the customs paperwork.
They'll stay in touch with the shipper, work with customs, process the
paperwork, and let you know when it's ready to pick up. They also
were able to answer questions like yours. I know the guys in
Wilmington DE and Newark NJ have handled gliders before.
