OLDER PILOTS PERFORM BETTER, STUDY FINDS
Researchers studying the impact of aging on performance found that
older pilots performed better over time than younger pilots, the
American Academy of Neurology reported on Monday (). The results
show that expert knowledge may offset the impact of old age. The
report is sure to be warmly embraced by those now lobbying for a
change in FAA rules to raise the mandatory retirement age for
airline pilots from 60 to 65. "These findings show the
advantageous effect of prior experience and specialized expertise
on older adults' skilled cognitive performances," said researcher
Joy Taylor of the Stanford/VA Aging Clinical Research Center in
California.

For the study, researchers tested 118 pilots, ages 40 to 69,
annually for three years. All pilots were currently flying, had
between 300 and 15,000 hours of total flight time and held a
current FAA medical certificate. In flight simulators, pilots were
tested on communications, traffic avoidance, scanning cockpit
instruments to detect emergencies, and executing a visual
approach.

The study found while older pilots initially performed worse than
younger pilots, older pilots showed less of a decline in overall
flight summary scores than younger pilots, and over time their
traffic avoidance performances improved more than that of younger
pilots. The study also found pilots with advanced FAA pilot
ratings and certifications showed less performance decline over
time, regardless of age.
...
Researchers suggest that pilots with advanced FAA pilot ratings
may maintain performance over time due to a mechanism of preserved
task-specific knowledge, known as crystallized intelligence, which
is similar to what is seen in music or expert chess playing.

No. Viagra is a liability. It confuses them - makes them grab the wrong
stick.

Know why they give the men Viagra in the old folks' home?
Keeps them from rolling out of bed.

No need to call a doctor if you remain aloft more than four hours, either.

One COULD say this means older pilots are "stuck up" :-))

Yup, those young pilots are bigger than me, better looking than me,
faster than me, stronger than me, scan better, have better vision,
better hearing, and multi task faster/better...
So, why are they the ones getting caught in weather, having icing
emergencies, skidding off taxiways, running out of fuel, crashing
their jet on final approach, busting the ADIZ, punching the DC TFR,
crashing into the ocean on a calm night, hitting apartment buildings,
and generally giving GA a bad name?
denny - older than dirt, slower than a snail, weaker than lite beer,
and still able to fly from point A to point B without any excitement
whatever...

Could it be that the incompetent among the older generation(s) have
already been culled from the ranks by their errors, but the younger
ones haven't yet?

Because the difference between them and you in the characteristics you
describe as being to their advantage is small to nonexistent, whereas the
differences in experience are very large.

There are no old, bold pilots.
But many incompetent pilots remain lucky for decades.

Come on... I recall a certain high profile inadvertent thunderstorm
penetration accident that claimed the life of a famous octogenarian pilot
last year.
No one is immune.

Dang!
Just when Denny had me feeling all smug and superior, Peter lets the air out.

Yeah, and his relatives should have sued the propellor manufacturer
for causing his crash - it was obviously defective!
As for the suggestion that old pilots are just the leftovers from the
weeding out process - don't be giving an old pilot like me new
thoughts like that, it confuses me...

Not surprising. Young car drivers have better coordination and motor skills
than older drivers but take a look at the accident rates for young versus
older drivers. It's not through some fluke that teenage drivers pay a much
higher insurance rate than mature drivers.
Remember the old story about the young bull and the old bull looking down
the hill at a herd of cows? The young bull says "Let's run down the hill
and screw a cow". The old bull says "Let's WALK down the hill and screw
them all"! The exuberance of youth sometimes gets in the way of wisdom.
