....rating you'll work on?
....flying related goal?
I've been promised that spring is coming. Many of us that have flown very
little or maybe not at all during the last several months will soon be
shaking the cobwebs from our heads and blowing the dust off our wings.
Tell us where you'll be going and what you'll be doing!
My wife has been making preliminary plans to take a short tour with the
first stop at Hershey, PA, then maybe Niagara Falls and onto Cedar Point at
Sandusky, OH, then onward to the in-laws near Grand Rapids, MI. When?
We're not quite sure, but I'm sure it will be after all our snow is gone.
What about you?

Commercial, since I believe I already have all non-instructional requirements
met and that have about 400 hours in a complex/high-performance to date.

Take my three boys on a month-long flying vacation across the US or up into
Canada. Given that the youngest is only two, this most likely won't happen
for at least four more years.

Hey Peter,
Stop in Lawton (LAW or KLAW if you prefer <G>) if you are heading west. I
would really like to meet you and the boys.
With luck, I will still be around the area--72 this July, hope for a lot
more years!! :-)))))))

KLBE, to have a pre-buy done on a Warrior I'm thinking of buying half
of (although I haven't decided yet if I want the nose or the tail).
My answers to the other two questions have a lot to do with how that
goes, but the preliminary answers are "instrument" and "taking my new
toy to visit as many airports as possible", Otherwise, the answers
are probably "instrument" and "taking a rented skyhawk to as many
airports as I can afford to - as long as I remember to schedule far
enough in advance, get it back before I get nailed for the daily
minimum, and all that other stuff that goes along with renting I hope
I don't have to deal with anymore :)"

We're in the best part of our flying weather during the winter (cold
dry air makes a happy airplane!) It's been mid-50s and mostly dry and
clear. Soon the tempuratures will rise, and the winds will pick up and

Spring break is coming up quickly, and we'll be flying to
Fredericksburg, Texas to check out the only other aviation-themed
hotel (that I know of), the Hangar Hotel. I hear they've done some
remarkable things there, and Mary and I want to see how they do it.
Unless, of course, the usual springtime line of persistent T-storms is
draped between here and there. Then, we'll go....wherever the weather

Last June I took my then 8 year old and 6 year old boys on a flight across
the US, from NY to Denver, to spend a week with my brother's family. A
portable DVD player with two screens (ala Target for US $100) on the back of
the front seats that interfaced into the audio panel, a hand-held Nintendo
DS, and a backpack of books (and a porta-potty) held their interests for the
two 3.5 hour legs out and back. We also brought along a light cooler full of
drinks and snacks.
Oshkosh would be an excellent trip with the children but under 5 years old
would be a challenge, I will admit. :).

Too funny. I had the DVD thing going for a two-hour trip last year with the
two and four year olds. Unfortunately the Warrior doesn't have headrests so
the wife had to hold it for a while... Pretzels and chocolate milk were on
the menu and by the end of the trip, on my Jepps as well. I'm thankful for
the 40 free replacements they allow per year.

Don't EVER let a 7 year old learn that if he jumps in the back of a
172 he can change the pitch. I thought after that I'd need one of
those tranqullizer dart guns.
Oh, and he also learned if he was alone in back shifting, fast, from
side to side was fun, too.
I'd give almost anything for an hour or two more of those times.

You'll love Fredericksburg and the Hangar Hotel. The food at the cafe
adjacent to the hotel is good, and one sits right on the flight line.
It is a popular place on the weekends.
The town of Fredericksburg is well worth visiting. It is an old Texas

the Nimitz Museum of the Pacific, which is not to be missed.
Hope you get down here to enjoy our weather and hospitality.

Thanks, Michael! We'll try to take you up on that.
The plan (at this distant point) is to depart for Texas next Sunday.
Unfortunately we work till noon, so the odds are we won't be off the
ground till nearly 1 PM. Since we'll need to make one fuel stop (it
flight plans at 5:42 hours, assuming 135 knots), I suspect we'll only
make it to Oklahoma City or the Dallas area before stopping for the
night.
Or, we could get an early jump, have a great tail-wind, take advantage
of the extra hour of daylight (thank you, Congress!), and get there by
sundown. Dunno yet, and we won't know until we do it. Either way, we
SHOULD be in Fredericksburg by Monday, late morning.
Now, of course, being March, we could be sitting here under a 3-day
ice storm by Sunday. Or, Texas could be getting his with persistent T-
storms. In which case, we'll head...East. Or West. We don't really
care -- we just want to fly!
Really, once I'm in the cockpit, I'm already where I want to be...
:-)
I count no less than 7 airports around Fredericksburg. Is T82 the
best for us to use?

I'm going to South Carolina tomorrow, twice. I'm taking the Airbus because
the heat works really good. As soon as the autopilot comes on, I'll take out
my 'Fundamentals of Instructing' because I figure after 28 years of flying,
I might as well get my CFI. I don't have a goal other than making each
flight better than the last. Then I'll do it again on Friday, and again on

Ha... I was not expecting a third child to come along when I purchased my
Bonanza. While the aircraft does have a fifth and sixth seat option, they are
not installed currently and I am a bit hesitant in doing so given that they
are installed in the luggage area. That bridge will need to be crossed

No worries- I wait until we are in the flight levels before pulling out the
DVD player. Tomorrow's selection is the classic movie "The High and the

I'd be leery about putting one of my kids in the "trunk" too. I (and I'm

Yep. T82 is Gillespie County, home of the Hangar Hotel and the
"poodle-skirt" style diner. Single runway (5000', 32/14 if I remember
correctly) is in good shape. Field altitude is something like 1700',
so you're in the Hill Country for sure. I haven't parked there
overnight, but my guess is that there is no charge if you're at the
hotel.
You know, of course, that when you're there, you're only a 20-minute
hop to San Antonio, which, if you haven't been there, is a trip well
worth making. I don't know if they're doing tours at Mooney, but if
they are, you're only 10 minutes or so from Kerrville.
You're also correct about the weather. Naturally, it has been
Chamber-of-Commerce perfect this week, with clear skies, wafting
winds, and highs in the 70s. My guess is that you may be in luck on
this end. Having lived in Milwaukee for 7+ years, I fully appreciate
the temptresses controlling the upper Midwest weather at this time of
year. For about a month up there, we always swore that we could see
spring, only to be disappointed with a snow storm or horrendous ice.

Excluding the low probability of an event that infuses a very large sum of
money into my accounts, I honestly don't think I will ever upgrade to a true
six-place aircraft. Instead, I most likely will try to make it work with the
Bonanza (UPS the luggage, etc.) since the aircraft fits 95% of my missions
now and in the foreseeable future.

Damn! So our financial situations are the same too. I could have posted that

I'm in. Where do I sign up?
Seriously, I got checked out in a Cherokee-Six five years ago because my
kids were too big to stuff into my Cherokee 140.
I rented it once. My 140 has done everything since.

ATC (to supervisor): We're picking up screams in the cockpit.
Supervisor (listening): Continue monitoring that frequency

Truth be told, I'm not totally kidding. I have no concrete data but I
imagine the vast majority of aircraft owners with $300K+ airplanes are NOT
working for someone else.

Do you think you would have gone on [even a few] more trips with the family
if you *did* have a Six/Saratoga? I know it's not as easy an answer as it
might seem.

I agree.
I've been trying to come up with a flying/consulting idea, but still haven't
worked it out.

Probably not. Mostly because I'm not instrument rated, so my overnight trips
are few and far between. Actually, I've only made three. First one I got
stuck by fog on Cape Cod. #2 was Oshkosh 2001. #2 was the day after I
returned from Oshkosh. My wife and kids had flown commercially to Chicago
and driven from there. I left on Friday morning, but their return fliught
wasn't until Sunday. I spent Saturday night in New Hampshire visiting my
sister and her family.
99% of my flying is done solo.

I've pretty much given up on getting involved in an aviation-related
business. I see many similarities among the aviation, music/entertainment,
and sports industries. The ratio of successes to failures in these [what I
call] "passion-based" industries are too dismal and therefore too risky for
my phase of life. I'm more than willing to listen to opportunities but I
don't put any hope in it.
The main requirement in justifying a non-bizjet GA plane in the company is
to have a multi-client base spread over a radius of less than 500-miles.

Being CEO helps a lot, too.

next flying destination: La Grande, OR (where I work, sometimes)
reason for flying: Work
next rating: ATP AMEL/S (trying for both at the same time)
flying related goal: to retire from airborne fire fighting with ATP
everything.

1) Get signed off on the Super Decathlon to fly solo
2) continue with acro instruction/practice to prep for this Summer's
Sportsman's level competition
3) Start IFR
Went up in the Decathlon yesterday after a long hiatus. Was snakebit until
yeasterday due to weather, aircraft availability holidays etc.
Not nearly as rusty as I thought I'd be. got back into the groove with the
maneuvers and made 2 great 3 pts and one great wheelie.
