topo/terrain files for flight computers

Are topo / terrain files for hand held flight computers universal, or
software specific? I am getting to know XCSOAR, and it appears to suit
my needs. Unfortunately I don't know where to get topo files for the
areas I expect to fly.

Unfortunately, each PDA application uses its own.

I too wanted to give XCSoar a try until I found out that there were no
data/terrain files yet created for the area I fly.

If you are a professional, you can get high resolution AGL Data from
http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/SELECTION/inputCoord.asp and tranform them
into your needed format.

I tried it for GPS_Log with a program called "DEMtoMAP.exe". It is also
possible to create topographic maps with this data. It was rather
complicated, because in order to merge the data, it must me translated
into the right format with DEMtoMAP first. But for other Programms you
need other data manipulation software.

When I first visited XCSoar a few months ago, this terrain generation
tool was still under development. Looking forward to seeing the
results.

I got a reply this morning from my request last night. I just haven't
been able to connect via the link in the email.

Just tried submitting again and within about 5 minutes received the
file, while I was waiting. The program queued, worked and then sent
the files, as it should. Try again.

I submitted my request, got my email, downloaded the files, and loaded
them into my iPAQ. EVERYTHING appears to work!!
I can't WAIT to go fly!!!
