Meigs.
Oh, wait... never mind.

Midway is a good place to land. Although it is not exactly in
downtown, it is a subway train ride away.

Never forget Meigs. Don't spend a nickel in King Daley's domain.

I'm planning to fly to Chicago in May, traveling from the south for a long
weekend of fun in the downtown area. Any ideas for a good airport that is
reasonable in terms of proximity and convenience? Thanks in advance.

Midway. Financially competitive with smaller airports that are not as
convenient. Good handling at the FBO. Mass transit or rental car accessible
to downtown.

Make sure to call emperor Daley's office and give them a piece of your mind.
Better yet, boycott the city because of what they did and tell them
about it. I won;t spend my money there. At least not while that
jackass is in power.

Exactly, avoid Chicago, spend your money elsewhere. Iowa
City sounds good.

I flew into Pulwaukee(sp?) on the north end of Chicago in a C182. Seemed to
be an easy place to get into and out of. No landing fee if you buy gas as
well.

Do a google groups search on this subject. You will find several
recent threads discussing the merits and disadvantages of the Chicago
area airports.
My vote would be to fly to Midway.

Nothing beats Midway for convenience to downtown. All the other
relievers have relatively poor train service, especially on weekends.
Midway trains run 10-15 minute intervals. All others are 2 hrs. If
you rent a car, expect to spend at least $20 per day parking
downtown. I saw one garage yesterday with a daily rate of $42.

I trained at Palwaukee and flew out of Chicago for about 10 years,
using Palwaukee (now Executive) airport. In terms of proximity to the
loop, Midway is closest and Executive is second. Other reasonable
options are Gary, Dupage, Aurora, Waukegan, Schaumberg, and Joliet.
Midway and Executive(PWK) will probably have the highest tie down
fees, so you will trade driving time to the loop with airport
expenses. If it's not rush hour, the drive is probably about 30
minutes from Midway, 45 from Executive, 1 hour from Gary and
Schaumberg, 1:15 from DPA and Aurora, 1:30 from Waukegan.
A weekend in Chicago isn't cheap, but it's a great city with tons to
do. Enjoy.

Tie down fees at Midway and Chicago Executive are pretty comparable. Both
waive some of the fees with fuel purchase. Getting to Chicago by rental car
from either is probably about the same. But, unless you really need the
mobility, the rental car and parking in downtown will far exceed the cost of
any tie down fees at either location.
A cab to and from Chicago Executive is possible but it will cost you about
$70 one way.
Use Midway and mass transit for the cheapest overall.

We were regulars at Meigs Field, going to the museum, shopping the
golden mile, birthday dinners downtown, etc... Since the mobster mayor
destroyed the field I have not and will not spend a penny in his
city...

Mary and I haven't set foot in the King's realm since he bulldozed
Meigs, and we won't return until he's out of office.
It's not much, but it's all I can do.

Everyone I know that lives outside of Cook County wish it was its own state
because it skews the demographics and elections for the rest of Illinois.

That's not just a Chicago phenomenon.

Thats OK, I've skipped Houston since that Halliburton swindle job in
Iraq, and Orlando is going down the tubes...a junior Miami... JG

MDW's concrete "crash pad" at the SWA wreck site should be done. The
instruments needed to land on that runway heading SE might be
installed now, as I've seen jets land heading SE over I-55 this year.
Plus you get the heavy duty CFD foam trucks and 3+ trauma hospitals
are nearby for those with shakey landing skills :) jg
