View Full Version : Pix of Wright Bros Memorial, Ocracoke Island, more...

Finally got 'round to putting together a webpage of photos from our
recent East Coast Barnstorming tour.
Here's one of Mary and me (with Atlas) at the Wright Brothers Memorial
in Kill Devil Hills, NC:
http://tinyurl.com/yojtj8
If you ever get a chance to fly there, take it -- for me it was like
visiting the Sistine Chapel or Mecca -- almost a religious experience.
Here's one of us at the Howard's Pub "Welcome to Ocracoke" sign:
(Many thanks to those who recommended this great place to stop!)
http://tinyurl.com/2dgys8
Here's a short video of the pathetically broken Cirrus on the side of
the runway at Ocracoke Island: (It hurts to look at it!)
http://tinyurl.com/38u2ur
Here's a pic of our Million Dollar View from our hotel balcony on
Myrtle Beach...
http://tinyurl.com/29xb95
Completely by accident, we flew to the beach that has been rated "2nd
Best in the World" by Conde Nast, right behind Waikiki Beach.
Finally, if you're really bored, you can see a whle bunch more pix and
videos from this flight to West Virginia, North & South Carolina,
Alabama, Tennessee, and Missouri here:
http://www.alexisparkinn.com/2007_east_coast_flight.htm
It was six days off, four days of flying, 17 hours in the air, 2008
miles -- all following the sun.
Enjoy!

Hmmm. That "TinyUrl" link doesn't seem to work. Try this one:

If that STILL doesn't work, you can try paste the original link into

I could not get a single one of your videos to play, and I think I have an

Great shots & memories for you (couldn't get the video to work tho)..
One of our great joys here at home is replaying the old slides (those little
things projected on a screen :) of travels. Never "dump" them - I've gone
through the 'gotta slim this down' stage several times, and always regretted
throwing out some shots later on.........

A CD can hold a hundred or more pictures, a DVD nearly a thousand.
There's no reason to "dump" anything, except perhaps as you're shooting
and need more space on your card.

I was talking "slide" era, in retrospect. Don't want to remember how many
$$ is tied up in Kodak carousels in my hall closet!
Even with digital, you must edit the "slide show" for guests to the 'creme
de la creme', or else you're back to bribing them with cognac, cake, and ice
cream AFTER the show ends, and sometimes, if they know you well enough, even
that tacky tactic doesn't work any longer.... Don't ask...

It was a brisk, beautiful day, with a stiff wind (thankfully, right
down the runway) that Orville & Wilbur would have appreciated.
When you follow a high pressure system, you generally get nice, clear
skies! :-)

Well, .avi files are kind of unusual nowadays. They are unfortunately
the native file type my Canon camera uses, and I was too lazy to
convert them to .wmv or .mpg files.
They run fine for me using RealPlayer. (Which, by the way, is no
longer so damned invasive. I guess Real got the message...)

Good stuff Jay. We did the Wright Memorial last year. http://pad39a.com/gene/wright.html
Memphis and Myrtle Beach bring back memories of flights too.
And BTW, March 14 thru 16 I was making a flight from St Louis to
Kansas and then to Montana and back home. Had 60+ knot tailwinds
coming home across Iowa - thank you very much. ;)

Um, well, I'm fairly certain. I wasn't PIC at that point, and wasn't
paying TOO much attention to where we were -- but I'm fairly certain
that is the Indy 500 speedway.

Yeah, those headwinds that followed that cold front were really
something. We stayed up at 8500 feet, to stay in smooth air, but the
trade-off was a SLOOOOW flight.
Luckily, my kids are now old enough (and experienced enough) to be
able to "hold it" for up to four hours, so we just flipped on the XM
radio, hit the autopilot, and enjoyed the flight!

The shot of the race track is in fact the Brickyard, but the next
two shots labeled as Indynoplace are some other city. The Colts
play in the Hoosier Dome, which as the name implies, has a roof.

Jay's picture looks like it was taken about a mile or so north of the
river in Cincinnati, looking south-ish at maybe 170-175 degrees.
Another Ohio note: in several weeks, many student pilots will start to
fly in many areas of the state - mostly around the cities, but some out
in the country as well. They will mostly be day VFR, with some night
VFR mixed in. They will have no radio, no electrical system, and
probably won't show up on radar. At first they will be practicing
takeoffs and landings, but will very quickly start practicing air-to-
air combat/refueling operations. See http://206.183.13.237 for details.

I vote for the Ohio river and the stadium(s), Riverfront Stadium AKA Cinergy
Field or what ever they call it now... being in Cincinnati.
http://www.ballparks.com/baseball/national/cinerg.htm
I71/75 is on the right, 471 is off the left side of Jay's pic. I've given
hundreds of truck drivers directions to 2 Plum St, just on the KY side, off
of I471 between the interstate and the Licking River. If you live in
southern Ohio, chances are that you've eaten produce that has made it's way
through Castelini's facility in Wilder, KY.
We liberated our Aztec from an owner just up the road at Butler Co Airport

There are two possibilities here:
1. As the non-flying right seater, I had sunk deeply into my "2nd hour
stupor" by that point in the flight, and didn't know where I was.
2. I have since conflated the two cities in my memory after
downloading the pix.
I suppose a little of both is possible.
Wouldn't it be nice if there was a way to LABEL pix as you took them?
I suppose some higher-end cameras may allow that, but, shoot, when you
come back from a week off, with 178 pix to sort through (or more),
it's hard to remember the order and the location.
(Which is why, incidentally, you'll notice that most of my pix include
some sort of identifiable background, and almost always include a
member of my family. That way, even if I can't remember where we
were, at least I've got a pic of my kids or wife!)

You need to get Nick a decent digital camera, and make him the family
photographer.
I've been amazed at how well Becca does with photography. There's
something about kids their age that allows them to see and recognize
unique and unusual angles, lighting, etc. I guess by the time you
get to our age, all you care about is keeping the camera level and our
thumbs out of the way!
I also think we are still slaves to the "film mentality", which meant
"DON'T WASTE A SHOT" (Well, Montblack seems to have gotten around
*that* okay. Heck, he takes pictures of me taking pictures! :-) I
often try to wait for the "perfect" shot, and end up missing it.
My daughter has never used a film camera, and probably never will.
Therefore, she has no problem shooting pix of "dumb stuff" that ends
up looking really cool. She has taken some remarkable photos of
things like the interior of our airplane, and the glass bricks in the
airport terminal building -- shots I would NEVER have taken.

There is.
Where cost of each picture is not an issue, (as is true with digital
pictures) take a pad of paper after a sequence, and make some notes on it as
the picture's location, date, ect, (while your memory of the details are
still fresh) and take a picture of the note. Later, you can download the
pictures and change the file name to indicate what the pictures are of.

My old Kodak DC-260 has a feature that you can record a audio notation to
any shot - which I have NEVER used in the 8 years I've had the camera, and
would have to dig the manual out to remember how to use it..

Some cameras have a built-in microphone that lets you record a few
seconds of audio to go with the picture. Or, carry a recorder, or
a notebook.
It may already be available on high-end cameras, but I figure one day
cameras may have a built-in GPS that will put a lat/lon/alt stamp on
each picture, just like the timestamp is put on there now. It wouldn't
work indoors, underground, or (sometimes) in a vehicle, but it would
work for a lot of vacation-snapshot type pictures.
Alternatively, if you carry a GPS (in your pocket or on the panel) and
can download the track data, match the GPS timestamps with the photo
timestamps to figure out where the photos were taken. You might want
to set the clock in the camera to GMT for sanity across time zones.
> I suppose some higher-end cameras may allow that, but, shoot, when you

The filesystem timestamps on the JPG files in the camera should reflect
the time the picture was taken, according to the camera's clock. These
timestamps sometimes get changed to the date the copy was done when you
copy the files from the camera to the computer or copy them around on
the computer. The camera also puts a timestamp _inside_ the JPG file,
along with data like the f-stop, exposure time, etc, and this data
(often called the "EXIF header") tends to stick with the picture.
Windows XP (and presumably Vista) can read this data and so can many
newer photo-editing programs. I suspect Macs can deal with it as well.
I have used jhead ( http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/jhead/ ) to set the
filesystem timestamp back to the EXIF timestamp so that photos will
sort in the order they were taken. jhead is a command-line program;
there are probably graphical programs that will do the same thing.

What's really sad is that, as co-pilot, I had a Garmin 496 planted
right before my eyes in the panel -- and I *still* didn't know where I
was when I took the pictures.
I musta had the thing on the XM radio station selection screen...

On one of my first European business trips just out of college, I took a
roll of pictures to impress my wife with my worldly travels. When it was
developed, it was a series of some beautiful woman in front of the typical
tourists stops. Distant. Up Close. Sensuous. Gazing to the horizon. etc.
My first explanation of what must have happend was that it got exchanged at
the developer. Those were still the days where the local drug store sent
them to a Kodak lab. Lots of opportunities for mistakes. Happens all the
time. Except that the pictures were taken in the same city in Europe where I
stayed. What are the chances. I think my mouth hung open just a little too
long. Those pictures went into a special photo album that got brought out
with the rest of the family pictures for the rest of our marriage.

That's good photography.
I used to take dozens of pictures of airplanes at Oshkosh. In fact,
I've got 24 years of photo albums from OSH, and the first 8 are
nothing but airplanes, and (once in a while) Mary. Or Chuck
Yeager... ;-)
They are incredibly boring, and we haven't looked at them in years. I
eventually learned that pictures have to have people in them, or some
sort of perceived motion. A plane going past with afterburner flames
is good, people or not. But a plane parked alone on the ramp, unless
the lighting is perfect or unique, isn't.
Unless you plant your kids in front of it. Then it becomes part of
the family, and a worthy picture -- even if they're not smiling.

I noticed you didn't include any photos of the "sights & attractions" at
Myrtle Beach on your webpages.

Heh! Well, um, I actually didn't take any pictures of that. I can't
drool and take pictures at the same time...
God almighty, all those spring break college girls prancing around
wearing (literally!) nothing was nearly fatal. Poor Joe (my 16-year-
old son) still has a sore neck from experiencing SBW* for two straight
days.

Luckily, as an old married geezer, I have learned to move only my
eyes, behind dark sunglasses...

And when your wife dope slaps you upside the head, you wonder, "Did I
say that outloud?"

Is Joe the same son you were planning to take on a European tour? you
might want to ask him to relax a bit, there are places where he might
be a wee bit overwhelmed...

One and the same. He's slated to go to Spain with his Espanol class
next year, and he's already counting the weeks and days.
I'm sure he's already researched the location of every nude beach in
Europe...

Is he planning on participating, or just observing?

At 16 (well, 17 by then) I suspect he'll be hiding in the bushes, with
high-powered binoculars and a good digital camera...

That's not the way to do it. Tell him to act Nike.
