View Full Version : March '07 Soaring: Glider Stamp from Yugoslavia

April 4th 07, 04:28 PM
Since my family was from this area, the stamp caught my eye. The city
in the background is Dubrovnik (Croatia), situated on the coast of the
Adriatic sea. The "glider" that was identified as a Zlin Z-22 appears
to be a float plane, at rest in the water off the city. Searching the
internet, the only reference I found to a Zline Z-22 was a smal Czech-
built powered trainer built in 1946. Wing span 35 ft, takeoff weight
1279 lbs, 53 hp, wing loading of 8.2 lbs/sq ft. This sounds like a
light sport aircraft, not a glider.

Does anyone have more information, or is the Soaring magazine just
wrong?

That glider is Greek. The picture was copied from the Hellenic Soaring
Archive and not attributed as it deserves (Bad dog! Bad!). See:

http://www.paragliding.gr/gliding/

where full details about it are on their "Building gliders in Greece"
page. Just scroll down a bit and follow the link.

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately I could not locate the
reference you sited in the above link. From the main page, I clicked
on photo album and found the " Building Gliders in Greece". There was
no mention of a Z-22, but I did see one color photo of a different
float glider (but not the Zlin from the stamp). Was I looking in the
wrong place?

That's not unexpected. I was commenting about the photo published on
r.a.s by Frits Wokkel, which immediately preceeds my message in the
thread. I recognised that photo as an unattributed copy of the one I
referred to on the Greek soaring site.

I have never, IIRC, seen a copy of Soaring and certainly haven't seen
the issue you referenced. I haven't seen the stamp either, so can't
comment further. Sorry.
