I videotaped this from the port side of a KLM 747-400 last october, en
route from Amsterdam to Toronto, south of Greenland...

Not a close call at all. Looks like several thousand feet of vertical
separation.

Not a close call at all. Only required to have 1,000' of vertical
separation and it looks as if there were at least 3-4,000'.

Saying is a close call makes it sound like it was a dangerous incident,
where it was just an intersecting encounter of two flights, no doubt very
aware that each other were there.

I would agree. The B747 has a wingspan of 211 feet, and if I understand
correctly the minimum vertical separation at cruise levels is 2000 feet or
nine wingspans (1000 feet with RSVM). The KLM seems to be farther away.

Not close at all. I'd estimate a minimum of 2,000' vertical and
probably 4,000'.
