View Full Version : VP-2 Plans

I found a set of plans on the net. I was wondering if anybody had a vp-2
that wasn't finished yet and would be willing to part with it fairly
reasonable. I am currently implementing the plans into AutoCad/Solidworks.
If you are interested in them for reference only...let me know.
The plans for the vp-2 are at:

....yes, and when this page loads, it attempts to load a trojan,
Exploit_BO, in one of its more virulent iterations, onto your
computer, which in turn makes anyone running MSIE vulnerable to
downloads, trojans and other assorted unpleasant and destructive
behavior.
thanks anyway.

Is someone going to report this to the jerk's ISP, at least? Is there
anything else that can be done?

It's not his fault. The entire Wingsforum site/host is attempting to run
this script. McAffe identifies it as low risk, I've been seeing it pop up on
a number of web sites. Blame the host in this case, not the message author.

I didn't have any trouble with the website....and I run Norton. I have not
received any trojans or viruses at all. I actually got the website from
another forum that I a associated with. If anyone has gotten a virus because
of this...I am really sorry.

I've found this script execution on almost every aviation forum running
PhhBB forum hosting software. I don't know if it's really loading this
portal for trojans or not. Just the past day or so a new variant
Exploit-ANIfile.c has shown up on some of them also. The actual plans JPG's
if you want them are virus free and any good modern virus software should
keep you safe from the site itself.

Getting back to the original question, keep your eyes open, and you'l come
across a set. I purchased an unused set of VP-2 plans last year for $10 (I
paid the shipping). I was really just interested in looking at them, not
building them. I found another link for a scanned set, so I downloaded them.
A few weeks later, I saw a posting here from someone looking for a set. I
sold them to him for $10 plus shipping (another $4 I think).
Check barnstormers and ebay too.

Question people, these latest threads posted.....what the heck do they have
to do with a vp-2 or its plans? If you guys are interested in stuff other
than a vp-2 or its plans, then maybe you should start a new forum on Seseame

Since your own posting contributed nothing to knowledge of whereabouts of VP-2
plans or provided any information their contents, why did *you* leave the "VP-2"
subject line? Why should others abide by "rules" you refuse to follow yourself?

I don't know the answer to that, but I did find what I believe to be a full
set online, after searching "volksplane 2 plans."
They are all JPG's, I think, so it would require a bit of "creative
interpretation" to build a plane from it, but I believe it could be done.

I think Mr. Evans was concerned with the less than adequate
performance of the VP-2 and quit selling the plans to avoid liability.

That is also my understanding, which is why I suppose it is
unlikely that he would relinquish his rights or authorize others
to publish them.
Courts can order that infringing copies be destroyed. How
closely you would have to follow the plans to infringe on them
I don't know. It'd be a bummer to watch the sheriff's deputies
feed your airplane into a wood chipper.
More to the point, the inventor doesn't want people to build
them. That is probably worth noting.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't a copywrite last for

Yes, but the period is at least 75 years past the death of the author.
The authors certainly can release them to public domain well before that. I
wrote a commercial flight simulator game about 25 years back, and upon a polite
query about five years ago, provided just such a written release. When another
guy asked for a PDF file of the manual, I put the release inside the front
cover:
http://www.wanttaja.com/IFR.pdf
It doesn't make any difference for a VIC-20 flight simulator, but I'm not sure
whether one can shed legal liability for an aircraft design by making it public
domain. However, IIRC, the canard folks market a CD-ROM with complete Long-EZ
plans on it, and I suspect that if Rutan was worried, he could easily stop them.

I would suspect that he would have a better defense if he reserved
his rights. That would be a proactive step to prevent an accident.

They've made other changes to allow owners to prevent works from lapsing into
the public domain. The copyright on many of Disney's cartoon characters was due
to expire, and you can be sure the company won't let *that* happen....

I don't recall where, but I seem to recall that someone sued Burt Rutan
following an accident in either a VariEze or LongEze. According to the
story, Rutan won the case but was sufficiently annoyed that he discontinued
any association with plans sales.
OTOH, the issue of "Pirate Plans" seems to have gained a lot of amateur
advocacy based on the controversy over [millions of] copies of recorded
music. I am not sure how much of that is applicable to aircraft plans; but
I do have a practical, rather than legal, pair of suggestions:
1) If the plans are no longer available from either the original source,
or a successor, you really should thing about whether the project makes
sense. For example; if the plans were withdrawn because the designer had
doubts regarding the continued availability of a critical component, such as
a preferred engine; then perhaps you should share his doubts. You will be
stepping into the design, support and test pilot roles; after the original
designer gave up.
2) If the plans are still available and supported; then buy them! If you
place any value on your time, then even marginal support will more than pay
you back.

Sonny Bono sponsored some sort of Micky Mouse law extending
copyright protections for cartoon characters. But I think that
extension has or soon will run out.
IMHO, a cartoon character ought to be protected under trademark
like a caricature used as a logo.

It can, but the movies & cartoons themselves were different. The copyrights on
the earliest Disney cartoons had been slated to expire, and the company didn't
want repackagers to re-issue them (without paying their pound of flesh to
Disney, of course).

Ah yes. Trademarks may be used without permission, so long as they

Actually, "misspelt" may be obsolete, but still appears in some
dictionaries.
Dictionary.com shows it, as follows:
mis·spell /m?s'sp?l/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled
Pronunciation[mis-spel] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
-verb (used with object), verb (used without object), -spelled
or -spelt, -spell·ing. to spell incorrectly.
[Origin: 1645-55; mis-1 + spell1]

I don't have a cross reference to the OED, but they would presumably have
some discussion as well.

NOT EXACTLY, Ed...
source:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=misspelt
1. misspelt
Yet another example of a 'strong verb' past form. It is the past
tense and past participle of misspell. Apart from dialectal
preferences, it is equal in meaning to the form misspell in all ways.
British English shows a preference for retaining strong verb forms
(burnt, learnt, spelt, dreamt, spoilt etc). American English shows a
preference for ignora... I'm mean simplification (burned, learned
etc).
FROM: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.....
Spelt is also the simple past tense and past participle
of the verb to spell.

5. misspelt
V. To spell a word incorrectly.
According to the Oxford American Heritage Dictionary, Herald colleges

I had a similar problem with an English prof when I was in college. I
used "learnt" in an essay and she marked it wrong. Being the lazy bum
that I am, if WordPerfect didn't flag it as wrong, it was good enough
for me. I insisted I was right and she looked it up to prove me wrong
only to find I was right. Some college profs get a god complex and have
a hard time handling being proved wrong...

The mistake on her part would have cost me a grade on the paper. I did
OK in the rest of the class. I found that keeping good records was a
good defense for college profs that decide to grade on a personal likes
rather than what I learnt in class. I'd rather take a stand than be a

Nobody has ever remotely accused me of being a sheep
in my 69 years on this planet. Rich S. knows what I'm like. :-)
If you are met in life with the same penalties that have

it wasn't worth it.
Take heed of the advice that Rich S has so uniquely given
you and save yourself a lot of future grief and heartache.

I agree most of the time but some battles are worth the fight. At the
time (close to 20 years ago,) that battle was worth it. As I recall I
got a B in that class and that's the same grade I got in all other
writing classes that I took. On the other hand, I once proved a
computer science instruction wrong and I took a hard reaming on that
class. Rather than fighting it, I took it as a lesson to keep copies of
everything.
