View Full Version : Hawaiian MOGAS, ethanol, the EAA and your local legislature

I ran across this notice on the EAA website today regarding proposed
legislation in the state of Hawaii to exclude premium mogas from the
10% ethanol requirement. Please take a few minutes to read the Bill
itself. This may be very useful if you live in an area where only E10
is sold, and there is no way to modify your engines or fuel systems to
run ethanol. I don't personally have an aircraft that is affected by
E10, and I'm planning to upgrade the fuel system on my boat, lawn
mower, etc. But for those aircraft, boats, and chainsaws that can't be
modified or STC'd for ethanol, this does sound like a working
comprimise. It may pass in state legislatures without too much grief
from the radical environmentalists or farmers.

What's required for an a/c to run on part ethanol?

Seals, gaskets, O-rings, and and any hoses in the existing system may or may
not hold up against ethanol - likely at least some will not. Corrosion of
the fuel tank may also be an issue. If you want to go with more than 10-20%
ethanol you will need to re-jet your fuel delivery system.

When immigration is outlawed, only outlaws will immigrate.

There is also the problem of water in the fuel, and the overall loss of
horsepower. Your previous take-off distances will not apply.
