I was absolutely stunned the other day when I was looking at the
aerial view of my glider club (http://skysoaring.com) on Mapquest only
to find that there was a glider on tow complete with shadow! Hard to
tell but it looks like our Schweizer 1-34R being towed by our
venerable L-19 Birddog.

I can't copy a good link directly to the shot. Maybe someone else
can.

Here is how to manually find it.

1) Go to http://mapquest.com and search for Hampshire, IL
2) Zoom into level 9.
3) About 3 miles to the NNE is the major intersection of Rt 90
(Northwest Tollway) and Rt 20. Both are diagonal roads. Click on
that intersection and drag it to the center of the map.
4) Zoom into level 12.
5) Change to the Aerial view.
6) You should see the E-W grass strip just north of the McHenry/Kane
county line.
7) Look at the east end of the runway for a glider on tow. You can
zoom up to level 15.

Cool!

Enjoy, John

One more areo tow from our national soarring center in Arnborg Denmark.

Hammer also seems active, but no areo tow.

Arnborg btw. has 7 other active glider fields within 20 to 50 km.

Google Erath has a bunch.

At Seminole, a glider is in the circuit.

And there is a cruise missile captured in flight. And the Blue Angels.

Lots of neat stuff to while away the hours. Check the Google Earth
Community.

Looks more like the 13 m wings of a 1-26, John. The L-19's wings are
about 12 m, no?

See the Google maps view to find the similarly yellow-colored 1-34
and 1-26 tied down next to one another for comparison:

http://maps.google.com/

using these coordinates in the search block:

42.1544, -88.5151

and zoom in to the max.

Make sure "satellite" or "hybrid" view is selected.
