Flying up the central valley from LA, is there any on-field restaurant
that's worth a stop?
Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto, Madera, Stockton...any reason to prefer
any one over any other for either human or airplane fuel?

Restaurants, motel, shops - all within walking distance from the
runway.

I'll second that. A steak at Harris Ranch is a very good choice. The ramp
is about 50 yards from the front door.

and they now have self-serve refueling; i.e., you no longer have to
worry about calling for fuel before it closes.

I assume you are new to California. Harris Ranch is a must-visit place
for anyone flying up the central valley. My wife and I go down to
Mexico several times a year and even at 9:00pm she's asking for a
stop at Harris Ranch on the way back. The resturant has its down paved
and lit runway.

Lemoore approach once made reservations for me at Harris Ranch after I
asked to divert there!! Year ago, when I lived in Lemoore it was
pretty regular to make the 45 minute drive from the base out to the
resturant. It was an event. Steaks like no other.

Harris ranch is great. If in a small plane check Xwinds. I once
couldnt land there and had to go onward towards San Fran in a 152.

another spot - just went to this weekend - Techachapi Muni - closer to
LA, but had fuel for $3.50 a gallon self serve. In a windy pass but
easy airport. Watch for gliders just south and coordinate in Unicom -
but no prob. And $3.50!

I assume that results in feather soft landings?

Thanks for the lead on Harris. I had not heard of it but it does look
like a fine place to stop for lunch.

The runway looks like it might be more of a challenge than I'll feel
up to. If conditions are excellent, maybe I'll give it a try, but not
in a stiff crosswind.

Any second choices?
