Karen,

I have a Vertex VXA-700 which covers the 2 meter ham band and the VHF
aircraft band, but it isn't made any longer, so you'd have to try eBay
or similar. The unit does have some poor reviews for audio quality
and, in my local ham radio emergency preparedness net, we have found
that my iCOM IC-T2H 2 meter handheld gets through significantly better
than the Vertex.

That said, whenever I ask the tower at my home base for a radio check
on the Vertex, they give me a "loud and clear" even when I ask
further. And I have used it very successfully in my glider (a 12,000
foot "tower" helps!) on the 2 meter band. So, while it is not the best
it could be, it is uniquely capable and worth considering.

Hello Karen:

Although I am not familiar with the Vertex 710, I did look at the specs and
am familiar in general with the many radios that are on the market.
Although I did not look at the schematic, I doubt whether the handheld could
be converted to the 2 meter ham band transmit. The reason is that the
aviation band uses amplitude modulation, while the two meter amateur band is
almost exclusively frequency modulation. So, even if the transmitter could
be enabled on that band, no one would understand you.

An fm transmitter is entirely different than an am transmitter and I am not
aware of any transceiver designed for one mode that will throw in a
different type mode - unless it is specifically designed for that particular
purpose.

The good news is that 2 meter handhelds are so cheap and small, that you be
able to purchase new ones for only the cost of a couple of tows.

Cngratulations on the ham ticket. If you want to track your flights, you
may want to look into APRS. Then, the person on the ground can see exactly
where their spouse is flying.

The Vertex VXA-700 supported the ham radio band. It is no longer available.

Unfortunately, the Vertex VXA-720 does not.

I have a virtually new VXA-700 that does indeed work on both VHF AM
and 2 meter FM bands. I almost never use the ham frequencies on this
radio and could be persuaded to part with it.

You got stuck by the same advertising as I: knowing that the 700
worked on the ham bands, and seeing advertising for the 710 that it
had ham bands on it, you probably assumed it could transmit on 2
meters. It can't, and no one will tell you how to modify it --
assuming it could be done. (I once modified a Yaesu transceiver for
an expanded band, but that was specifically covered in the
instructions for international use.) Jump at Mike's offer of a used
700 -- I did just that and am glad I did. Then see if you can find
someone to take the 710 off your hands. I ended up giving mine away,
and I'm still angry at South Coast Avionics for writing an
advertisement that could be interpreted as meaning that the 710 did
everything the 700 did. And angry at myself for not doing more
research about why the 700 was no longer available but had been
supplanted by another model that was very nearly the same. Fred
