A plan to close a runway at Chicago Executive Airport is economically
driven and could pose a danger for single-engine planes, some pilots
say.
"It's apparent to us, the small-airplane owners, they don't really
want us here," said Jim Loerzel, a pilot based at the former Palwaukee
Municipal Airport in Wheeling. "All the improvements are geared toward
corporate aircraft."

Last week, the airport board recommended closing Runway 6/24, the
shortest of the airport's three runways, citing Federal Aviation
Administration concerns about a Montessori school being built near the
runway and worries about its 50-foot width.
....
Wheeling issued a permit for the school at the southeast corner of
Capitol and South Drives.
Last fall, the FAA decided that although the building was not in the
protection zone, putting a school there was an incompatible use of the
land. School officials said only a corner of the parking lot would be
in the zone.

"Protection Zone", more like private property confiscation zone..JG

The airport was there first. So it sounds more like the school was the one
doing the infringing.

Yep. Great idea; build a school next to a runway and then complain that
there's a runway next to it.

Pretty much like the Hillsboro Air Show crash last year, where Intel--who
has sponsored the airshow for something like 20 years--built a factory on
the downwind leg of the airport that its corporate types use, and then
suddenly flip out about having a factory under the traffic pattern.

I have flown into Palwaukee quite a few times (in a Cherokee), and
almost always ended up on RWY 16/34 with the jets. Was this just my
experience, or does Palwaukee frequently put light-GA on the smaller
runways while keeping the jets on 16/34?
