One of my kids is enlisting in the military. She is requesting training as an
aviation mechanic.

Does anybody know if the schooling and experience in the military would have
any value when attempting to get an A&P certificate from the FAA?

It looks like she can obtain the A&P certificate when in the military if

Certain enlisted MOS's (jobs) in the military dealing with aircraft
maintenance qualify the military member to take the written, oral and
practical tests for an A&P license. Unfortunately, the military
training for those qualifying MOS's don't necessarily prepare the
applicant to pass any of those tests (lots of USAF crewchiefs never
laid a wrench on a reciprocating engine or repaired a fabric covered
flight control) so there are some schools that specialize in cramming
that extra knowledge into the cranium of military mechanics just so
they can pass the tests. I retired from the military as an aviator
but decided to get an A&P so I could work on my own plane. While I
have to sit through 18 months of training before I take the FAA tests,
the qualifying military mechanic can take the tests anytime he or she
feels they know the material and can demonstrate to the DME a
practical application of that knowledge.

Yes, that's how I got my A&P ticket, but the experience must be recent or
concurrent.

You don't just get the A&P ticket by virtue of being a military
mechanic regardless of your experience--you still have to take all the
examinations. Isn't this how you got your A&P?

required to complete their A&P. I don't recall what the details of the
program were.

The hardest part is to explain that unlike military aviation, money is an
object and that worn looking part will last till the next annual......

Yep, I visited a FSDO and asked exactly what paper I needed (an official job
description and a glowing letter from my supervisor typed on an Air Force
letterhead) to qualify to take the writtens, with that in hand I got the
forms to take the writtens. After passing the writtens I found a designated
examiner (great guy, his hangar was a throwback to the thirties) and took
the oral/practical.

Even with minimal "puddle-jumper" experience, well-rounded supersonic jet
experience is enough to qualify for the writtens and oral/practical; passing
them requires a lot of studying of the test material.

I'm an Aviation Maintenance Warrant Officer in the Army. I'm also an
A&P I/A, and have written letters of recommendation for several Army
mechanics.

They need 36 months of full time experience, in the right MOS, to
qualify to take the tests.

If she is joining the military just to get her A&P, there are probably
allot easier ways to do it?

You should contact a safety inspector at your local FSDO, and ask them
look up the MOS's that qualify. The Air force has very few, while the
Army has allot. They will not count maintenance training, and they
will subtract any leave or non-aviation details from the 36 months.
