View Full Version : Wierd TFR in Mid California

May 18th 07, 05:14 PM
I loaded up the AOPA flight planner last night and notice a large area in
mid western California that had a TFR. The shape was odd, and it was way
bigger than anything I had seen. I read the text and it was controlled by
the USCG, but I could not find any reason for the TFR. Anyone have any
idea what this is for?

This is only for curiosity sake, since it is not like I would go flying way
up there anyway. ;-)

ALL PILOTS should know this site:

<http://tfr.faa.gov>

May 18th 07, 05:31 PM
Cool Thanks. I have been to that site many times, but did not think of it
for this case. Last night I do not think it said marine life rescue. It
seems that this is a rather large TFR for a fish. :-)

Anyway, I saw these whales in the river on the news last night. Did not
think they would make a TFR for that. Oh well.

Yeah.. media here is going crazy over the whales, to the point
where it's getting int'l attention and everyone wanting to fly over
here so they can see/help Free Willy. I can see the TFR not being
fixed, as they'd have to cover all the way down to the Delta so they
can head out to sea, but where it is currently at affects arrivals into
SMF as well as just about direction of flight for departure out of SAC.

I'd love to hear any PIREPs from those in the area flying out
of Executive..

I don't see it now. Do you have the NOTAM number? We do often have
TFRs over Beale for unmanned aircraft but that doesn't sound like what
you are talking about. We also have a permanent Mickey Mouse TFR in
SoCal.

you are confusing with the petunias.

tsst tsst. Mixing up your solanaceae with your begoniaceae. Besides
petunias are a lot prettier.

It's been a while... <G>

BTW, the book was far better than the movie. Do you agree?

They way I read it, it isn't actually restricted airspace, its just
asking pilots not to hang around the whale. In fact they specifically
say opeartions at affected airports are not affected. Besides, its
only below 1000, clearly its for news helicopters. However, usually
the news helos stay above 1000 feet because the law enforcement helos
are below 1000 and the news guys have great zoom lenses anyway.

There is not much doubt.

I never saw the movie, but it would be very difficult to do well.

There was also a radio version which was attrocious--my patience for it
lasted about a minute!

And the classic BBC television series. It was so cheezy it was great.

which one? there were (at least, i.e., that I know of) two
movies made; a much earlier and unpretentious low-budget one
which was actually quite funny and the recent one that I didn't
like one bit.

The recent one. I never knew another existed.

The BBC radio version was the original version (before the book).
I'm a purist, so that one tends to be my favorite. On an aviation
related note, the radio version of the Hitchhikers' Guide is what has
been playing in my cockpit for the last 5 or 6 flight hours. I have
all 5 series on .mp3.

I watched about 20 minutes of the movie and turned it off. It was horrible.
The books are great. BTW, Towel Day is May 25.

You should be burned at the stake for such herecy (sp?). The radio series
was the original, and even today stands the test of time.

Yeah. They want to protect crowds from twisted pieces of falling aluminum.

The original purpose of TFRs was for things like this -- fires, media
circuses, etc., where there might be a lot of official air traffic or
way too many sightseers in the air. You get a whole bunch of planes in
a constricted area where all the pilots are looking at the ground
instead of for each other, and there will be trouble. Hence, the TFR.

I flew over the area yesterday late afternoon and didn't see any
evidence of the whales: no flotilla of rescue boats, nuthin'. Later
in the weekend I'll try again.
