Color, grey-scale or black & white?

My Garmin 195 is easy to read in shadow or bright light without
backlighting during daylight. At night I have the backlight set to
remain on for 30 seconds after the light button is depressed.

I did notice that the new sunglasses I acquired last spring make the
screen too dark to view without removing the sunglasses.

What make/model and type of screen do you use and what affects its
"viewability"?

John,

you might try using non-polarized sunglasses? The polarized LCD display
may be out of phase with your
glasses. Peek thru one eye and rotate the lenses 90 degrees to test this
theory.

I use a Compac iPAQ with "Anywhere Map", "Ozi Explorer", and "Pocket
FMS". The iPAQ has a color "transflective" screen and is practically
useless in a bright cockpit. Sometimes, I am better off turning off
the backlight and just putting the screen in direct sunlight.

My iPAQ is in a Bluetooth sleeve and there is a Bluetooth GPS Rx
Velcro'ed to the windshield, so the iPAQ can be moved anywhere in the
cockpit without losing (did I spell that correctly?)the signal. This
is handy when trying to locate the screen for the best visibility.

I have the Tampa TAC chart loaded in "Ozi Explorer", All of Florida in
"PocketFMS" and of course all of the US in "Anywhere Map". "Anywhere
Map" has less background clutter than the other two and therefore has
better contrast for visibility.

I have replaced the original Lipo battery in the iPAQ with one of twice
the capacity, but battery life using the backlight is still only about
two hrs.

I have a Garmin 295, and a Fujitsu ST4121 Tablet (for XM weather).

The Garmin has a bright backlight, so it does fine in daylight.

The Fujitsu is a transflective display, which uses small holes in the
display to let sunlight through the display as a backlight. It is
also viewable in the daylight.

However - I wear a pair of Rayban polarized sunglasses, and they
definitely attenuate the ST4121 display. I usually end up taking off
the glasses if I am taking more than a quick look at the radar. The
Garmin does not seem to have this problem.

Nathan,

I suspect it depends on how you orient the display with respect to
your glasses...
