Okay, since no one seems to be flying much, we might as well talk
about something truly important...like beer.
Mary just picked up a 6-pack of "Major Tom's Pomegranate Wheat" ale
from the store. Why?
Well, because it has a biplane on the container, of course! (Gotta
love her taste in beer... ;-) It appears to be a Stearman, but the
cockpit has a turtle-deck, so that's not quite right...
But I digress.
As I'm sitting her supping it (and it's quite good, actually, although
I'm not sure that "pomegranate juice" has any business in beer), I
started to think about all the "aviation beers" I've imbibed over the
years.
For some strange reason, brewers -- especially microbrewers -- seem to
be enamored with aviation. Can you name any of your local "aviation
ales"?
Better yet, can you bring any of them to the "Rec.Aviation H.O.P.S.
Party" at our campsite during Oshkosh, for all to enjoy?
:-)

Be careful. Some counties, like the one I live
in, are "zero-tolerance." There is NO legal BAC.
Which means that even one beer, regardless of the
effects on your driving, count as a DUI.

I saw Aviator's Gin at Bev Mo, two weeks later I saw a bottle at
Sacramento Skyranch aircraft parts supplier. They had even provided
FAA paperwork for it.

There's Warbird Ale from Indiana, brewed by a T-6 owner. It really wasn't
too bad!
I agree that talking about beer is preferable to inane questions about
mythological autopilots, and much more fun.

If you ever get off your ass and fly somewhere good instead of one flat
land airport after another you can fly to this place. He doesn't update
his website hardly ever but his beer can be found around here plus he's
an airplane nut.

At MUC there is Airbrau that has very good beer. I have a 5 liter
bottle with a plop-top that I brought back. In Feldkirchen outside of
Munich there is Fliegerbrau. They have very nice Weissbier glasses that
I bought. The inside has some radio controlled airplanes and some other
random stuff.
In Oakland there is Hanger One Vodka. Never been there but I have to
make the trip one day.

So, did you think I was posting from my car?
Let me get this straight: You have NO legal blood alchohol level where
you live? A glass of wine with dinner is now completely illegal in
your county?
That's sickening.
This crazy, never-ending expansion of the "Nanny Society" will
apparently never be complete, until every last one of our freedoms has
been taken away. They've driven the smokers out into the cold, so now
they're looking for some other "threat" to address. All in the name
of "the greater good".
Soon, we won't be able to go for a walk after dinner without complying
with a mandatory helmet law...

Well, I for one rejoice at that. Smokers should be driven out not
because it harms them to smoke (if you want to hurt yourself, be my

I highly recommend a visit to McMinville, Oregon's Golden Valley Brewery.
Excellent brew-pub with great food. They have a generous sample tray of
their products, with descriptions of the beers and ingredients, that I had
the pleasure of drinking my way through. Good Beer.
The FBO (at least a couple of years ago) had an ex-police black&white sedan
as a courtesty vehicle, with obligatory outboard swiveling searchlight.
Park that on the side of the road and watch the brake lights show!
http://www.goldenvalleybrewery.com/
Another great reason to visit McMinville is the Evergreen Aviation Museum,
home of the Spruce Goose as well as a superb collection of other aircraft.
You can walk to it from the airport - or alternately take your ex-police car
over there on the way to the hotel.
http://www.sprucegoose.org/
And a short flight west over the hills takes you to the Tillamook Air Museum
on the Oregon coast, with another great collection of aircraft housed in a
genuine WWII blimp hanger - the largest wooden structure in the world. The
building itself is awe inspiring - I remember they measure the roof area
(all wood) in acres.
http://www.tillamookair.com/
At that point, you're at a perfect launching point for flying the Pacific
coast - a fantastic air adventure in itself.

I haven't smoked in a long time, so I'm not upset that the laws supposedly
protect me from second-hand smoke, but I think they've taken it too far in
many areas.
In Seattle, for example, you are not allowed to smoke within 25' of a
building. I think that's ridiculous.
In New York, they have made it impossible to smoke at any restaurant or
Bar. I think that's also ridiculous.
The law should require some sort of signage on the restaurant to indicate
that is a smoking establishment, and if you don't like smoke, you don't go
there... If there is concern that all restaurants would choose to be
smoking restaurants (which they wouldn't) they could put an incentive in
for restaurants and bars that completely smoke free.
If a man owns a small business, he can't smoke in his office, even if he's
the only one there. I say let him smoke if he takes the necessary
precautions to prevent his smoke from venting into the rest of the
building.
The laws for asbestos are less rigid than the laws for cigarrete smoke.

Don't forget stupid, ****ed up, stupid. They even changed the
name of the charge to DUII from DWI because it's now "Driving
Under the Influence of Intoxicants" rather than "Driving
While Intoxicated" because the "0.08" doesn't count here.
Yes, cold medicines count.
But think about it. Someone ****es you off, all you have to do
is follow them around a little while, witness them having A beer
somewhere and getting in their car. A simple cell phone call
later and you don't even have to be at the arrest because the
cops will take them in and breathalyzer them.

I love Paris. People smoke everywhere.
No one complains.
I don't smoke anymore but...jesus cut the crappy state-control-of-every-

For those who do smoke, I encourage you to stop. If you were able to look

One thing is for certain, things start improving immediately. Just some

Sadly, for some it might never get better.

Well, I quit smoking 21 years ago. Best think I ever did, and I hope
my lungs are nice and pink again.
But all these stupid laws making it a crime for people to smoke --
OUTSIDE, now, for chrissakes -- is just sickening.
I was visiting a friend at the hospital last week, and noticed that
they have now banned smoking OUTSIDE the hospital. All these poor
people, some in wheel chairs, must now push themselves OFF HOSPITAL
PROPERTY to have a smoke!
Un-friggin'-believeable. How did this kind of society develop when we
weren't looking? Big Brother really is now EVERYWHERE.

Ah, you've described my dream flight. Take a couple of weeks off, and

Oregon, Washington, and down Hwy 1 to San Diego.
I've done it in a motorcyle -- someday I want to do it in Atlas....

On the ground, engine off, your aircraft has to be able to
1) balance on its mains
2) follow the stripe down the center of the taxiway for at least
100 feet or 30 m
3) with the landing lights off, bend the left wingtip around to touch
the spinner, then the right wingtip
4) recite the phonetic alphabet backwards

I am in favor of No-Smoking legislation.
However, before any bill gets passed, the State must get off all of the tax
monies smoking generates. All of it ...cold turkey. That amount of lost
revenue gets slashed from the budget ...again, cold turkey. No new taxes are
allowed, to make up for the deficit. Programs must be cut!
And that will NEVER happen.

Jet City Ale. It's supposed to be a Seattle microbrew, but it's actually
produced under contract by a brewer in (where else?) Iowa. :-)))

Statistics
A recent study found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year.
Another study by the American Beer Institute found that the average American
drinks 22 gallons of beer a year.
This means, on average, Americans get approximately 41 miles per gallon.
Not bad!!!
I love statistics!!

No way!
I'll be it's made out in Amana (17 miles from here, by air) at the
Millstream Brewery. They do a lot of that "contract beer" stuff.
The brewery is an easy walk from the bucolic grass strip in Amana...
(No, we're NOT drinking and flying. But Atlas has a wonderful 1400+

Note: Multinomah county (where Portland actually is) is not

Do you mean to imply that you believe that there is no harm caused to your
lungs when you breathe smoke in the air that you did not personally suck out
of a cigarrette? I'm afraid I just don't concur with that opinion.
However, I DO believe that you and I should both have the right to choose if
we want to take that risk. As long as I have proper warning that I might come
into contact with smoke if I go somewhere like a bar, restaurant, office
building, etc., it should be MY responsibility to determine what's best for
my well being and the well being of my family.

Not quite everywhere, but it's headed in that direction.
There are still some people who do not have GPS enabled cell phones.
My neighbor was telling me that she had heard of a device that goes on a
keychain that you can give to your kids to keep track of them in case of an
abduction. She said the current version is essentially a memory stick where
you can keep vitals and such for the police to react quickly, but they are
working on a GPS unit that will "LoJack" the kids.
I said all they have to do is embed the chip in the kids hand, call it a
Logan, and they can kill everyone off at 31.
As long as I don't have to have one.

That's not what the SHS studies were aiming at. Read what they concluded and
HOW they came to that conclusion. In the private sector it's called FRAUD.
IN the government sector it's called POLITICS.
If you're _really_ interested, Walter Williams did a two part series about
what a crock the SHS "research" was.
Here's a snippet:
"A serious public health threat had to be manufactured, and in 1993 the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stepped in to the rescue with their
bogus environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) study that says secondhand tobacco
smoke is a class A carcinogenic.
Why is it bogus? The EPA claimed that 3,000 Americans die annually from
secondhand smoke, but there was a problem. They couldn't come up with that
conclusion using the standard statistical 95 percent confidence interval.
They lowered their study's confidence interval to 90 percent. That has the
effect of doubling the margin of error and doubling the probability that
mere chance explains those 3,000 deaths.
The Congressional Research Service (CRS) said, "Admittedly, it is unusual to
return to a study after the fact, lower the required significance level, and
declare its results to be supportive rather than unsupportive of the effect
one's theory suggests should be present." The CRS was being kind. This kind
of doctoring of research results would get a graduate student expelled from
a university."
> I'm afraid I just don't concur with that opinion.
And neither did the SHS studies. Please dig a bit beyond what the MSM
force-feeds you.

It appears some states allow counties to do that sort of thing, and
according to this source one Montana county used that authority to adopt
open container laws:
http://alcoholism.about.com/b/a/013416.htm
But I can't find anything to support the claim that Washington county in
Oregon has the alleged law. Not that it doesn't exist, but I'm finding it
difficult to verify with online searches.

Let's not quibble, you went from 5% to 10%. Ok, I'll call that doubling the
margin of error.
They're at 90 (friggin') % for crying out loud - down only (10%) from 95%
.....confidence.
Also...
"That has the effect of doubling the margin of error and doubling the
probability that mere chance explains those 3,000 deaths."
Word games! Double-Plus Ungood. Yuck!
Again, ...they're at 90 (friggin') % for crying out loud.
Let's see if I can do those numbers in my head, hmm...that's 9 out of 10
case.
Sure, "mere chance" plays a role in some of the deaths, but a 9 out of 10
CONFIDENCE LEVEL IN THE REST. HELLO?
BTW, 90% is the statistical minimum. So we might be hanging around the 93.8%
mark. I'm just saying...
I might agree with your bigger point, but this argument, on its own, is
disingenuous - a sales job.

Fly into ANE, then hitch a ride in the airplane of minivans.
That way you only have to deal with one blithering idiot - for 6 hours!!!

Just for the helluva it, I did a Yahoo search on "Aviation Beer".
Got this one:
http://www.warbirdbrewing.com/the_warbird_story/story_index.htm
(P-51 beer? Cool!)
and this one:
http://www.beer-toone.com/about.htm (Okay, it's not beer -- he's a
lawyer, named "Beer"! My kind of attorney...)
and this one:
http://www.wallywine.com/p-28175-aviation-gin-750ml.aspx (It's
actually gin, but, hey, it's about "flying"...sorta...)
and this one:
http://www.langcreekbrewery.com/ (A back-country pilot's dream
brewery, located in Montana.)
The connection between pilots and microbrews is amazing.

I'm a smoker and I have no problem with that. Nobody likes to be hit in the
chops with a cloud of smoke coming out of a building.
For a year I had quit smoking and I learned a lot of respect for the comfort
of the non-smokers around me. After hosting a card game the stench would
linger in my house for days. So even if I am given permission to have a
smoke in a non-smokers home I will step outside if I need it that bad.
I do strongly belive that all airports should have an indoor smoking lounge
within the security area. During delayed/cancelled flight periods, stuck
passengers would easier to deal with not to mention relive the added burden
of multiple trips thru screening making those lines that much longer.

I found out the hard way. I cannot for the life of me find
documentation of it, either. It's not a very publicly touted
law. There's no commercials about it on TV and if you look in
the Washington county website (google for Washington county
oregon law and skip past the lawyers) it's impossible to find.
My lawyer seemed to agree with the county, though, and I paid
his ass, no state-appointed crap for me, dammit.

Who I had to supply with beer? I look at Oshkosh and yawn. I'd rather
be flying in the mountains. Hell, I just bought a boat. I'd rather
take that out. I grew up in the Twin Cities. No way I want to walk
around OSH all day and then sleep in a tent. Now if somebody had an RV,
maybe. Plans are firming up for ANE, looks like we'll be there about
July 8th for a week. I'll let you know for sure later.

Did somebody say July 8th? <g>
http://www.b17.org/tour/
Aluminum Overcast Tour dates: (ANE) July 6-8
I bought a pack of 10 Raffle Tickets. I'd fill your name in on one of them
if I knew you were going to be in town to enjoy your winnings.
Chapter volunteers (4? 5? 6?) get their names drawn for a ride to the next
stop - St Cloud, MN (which is 43 nm from our airport).
The Denver to Waukesha flight would be a fun ride.
Waukesha is in (SE) Wis., between Madison and Milwaukee.
Last time, the B-17 flew to Duluth from ANE. That's 110 nm. That gang of
lucky volunteers rented a van in Duluth and drove home.

What the heck. If you're here, you're here ....you're #395. Good luck!
"My" contact info is on all of my people's tickets.

The B17 was here last year on its tour. My youngest worked at the booth
selling their stuff so got to ride it from here to Denver. I flew down
and picked him up. He said it was cool but after a half hour it was
time to get out.

Yep I do but not nearly as much as before. I got my handicap down to 5
in the mid 90's but then realized what's the point of this? So I golf
occasionally now. This weekend we're taking the 5th wheel and the boat
to Helena. There's a time and place for everything.

After spending two sweating days guarding and selling ride tickets, I was
one of the winners to take the ride to the next stop. What a thrill!

I have been a RN for 16 yrs and I do smoke. Few times in 12 to14 hr
shift I go outside and have one. I am a hard worker, loyal, and have
seldom called in. I have a problem when I have to pay, with my tax
dollars, for pt's healthcare that have completely milked the
healthcare system,,,,,,,inc me as a RN!!! The people that are on
welfare / passport are the pt's that run me ragged....."They think
they have some entitlelment!!!"....,to order me around!!! I am tax
paying US citizen....NOW!!! I have the illegals also mutching off of
me, and they too, run me around as if I am a waitress, Even if I
explain I had someone very sick and I had to help them first, they get
attitude about how their soda took too long to get to them. I have
pt's that are on dialaysis that leave the the hospital, get high, and
return.....and DEMAND!!! their pain meds.......Dr's and all know
it..........IT IS SICKENING....Now they tell me I can't go outside,
without walking the distance of a football field, to have a
cigarette!!!!!!! MY GOD!!!! It is not illegal!!! I am a adult, and I
do know it is not at all healthly.....I would even pay 10 times the
healthcare premiums that non smokers pay......I realise it causes
copd........BUT I am getting to the point I am getting VERY
bitter........Probably nicotine w/d:-) Help!!! This nurse about ready
to give up the heatlhcare system all together!!! Are there any other
nurses out that agree?

Hey, you're in luck. Rides go about 30 minutes, according to the website.
http://www.b17.org/faq/
Q: How long does the flight experience last?
A: Each flight experience lasts approximately 35 minutes, of those 20 - 22
minutes will be in the air.
I've just now got the inside dope - the skinny:
Aluminum Overcast will fly from Denver, back to OSH, for a 10 day rest.
She'll then do the Wis,
Minn, Iowa legs, right before AirVenture.
Our EAA Chapter has been "invited" to OSH for help with maintenance & upkeep
of the B-17. We're lining up volunteers for the work party.
June 18: She departs Denver, for OSH
June 29: She makes a short hop to Waukesha, Wis., from OSH
July 6-8: She'll be at ANE
(North End of the field @ AWAM - by the Tower)

I used to golf three times a week. Then I learned how to fly, and

Flying is cool but so are other things. I would love to take a sailboat
into the South Pacific for a year or two and see a lot of the WWII islands.

I can fit three frull bags in the luggage compartment.
Flew/golfed from Colonial in Texas, to Banff in Alberta.
And,remember, "Only God can hit a one-iron" -- Lee Trevino, but, boy-oh-boy,
can I hit a two-iron!
