I attended a mountain flying overview presentation a few years ago that was
headlined by Sparky I meson. Very relieved to read that both he and the other
pilot survived.

The details of this crash will be interesting to read as they are made known.

"Imeson began walking from the crash scene Sunday night, according to reports
from friends at the Townsend City-County Airport, who were involved in the
search."

....and was found 4 hours after the crash site was discovered.

Why would such an experienced mountain flyer walk away from the airplane?

It seems he felt he was well enough to walk to small town about 6 miles
away, according this post on Van's Airforce by an acquaintance of the pilot
who got a partial account of the accident during a visit to the hospital:
