Lockheed Penalized $3 Million Under U.S. Pilot-Service Contract
c.2007 Bloomberg News
By John Hughes

June 5 (Bloomberg) -- Lockheed Martin Corp. had $3 million withheld
last quarter
for poor performance under a U.S. contract to provide preflight
briefings to
small-plane pilots, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

"There's evidence of dropped calls and pilots not getting
information," FAA
Administrator Marion Blakey said today in an interview in Vancouver,
where she was
attending a conference. "There are penalties in the contract and we'll
apply them."

Lockheed, one of the FAA's largest contractors, in 2005 took
responsibility from
the agency for providing the briefings at 58 stations under a $1.7
billion award.
Pilots this year have complained about being stuck on hold awaiting
briefings.

The $3 million penalty for Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed was for
the first
quarter, FAA spokesman Paul Takemoto said. He said he didn't know
whether any
penalties are possible this quarter, when many of the pilot complaints
have occurred.

Lockheed, which is consolidating the number of regional briefing
stations to about
20, has taken steps to fix "intermittent service issues," spokesman
Keith Mordoff
said. "We're continuing to improve," he said in an e-mail.

Do you think we could withhold our taxes, come April 15th, if the government
continues to f*ck#p?

Ain't privatization grand?

LOCKHEED PENALIZED FOR FSS MISSTEPS

The FAA said Tuesday that it withheld $3 million in payments to
Flight Service Station contractor Lockheed Martin in the first
quarter because of poor performance. "There's evidence of dropped
calls and pilots not getting information," FAA Administrator
Marion
Blakey told Bloomberg

"There are penalties in the contract and we'll apply them." In
October 2005 Lockheed took over the 58 previously FAA-run FSS
facilities under a $1.7 billion award. Since the beginning of this
year pilots have complained about being on hold for extended times
while waiting for briefings -- in fact, several pilots recently
told AVweb that they had to wait on hold for an hour or more to
get a preflight weather briefing. FAA spokesman Paul Takemoto is
unsure if more penalties are in store for Lockheed Martin in the
second quarter, which is when pilot complaints have increased
sharply.

Hmmm... maybe this will slow down the FAA's efforts to privatize
everything. Naw... wishful thinking, right?

Boy, I like that idea. There needs to be a comment section on the 1040
to address that.

Lockheed Martin fined and the Grand Compromise Immigration bill shot down
in flames all in one day?

If this keeps up it might restore my faith in government.

Something like 35% of people say their taxes are "about right" or even, "too
low": I wonder how that would shift if the gub'mint stopped withholding and
the workers had to send in a check every month or two weeks? (or, quarterly,
like self-employed...along with an extra 7.6% of SS, which we'll never see).

(Note how many people, who pay virtually ZERO taxes, say they pay too much,
but the rich don't pay enough).
