View Full Version : wife just called, teary eyed

gatt

....wasn't anything bad. She's managing a golf tournament almost directly
under the final approach at Aurora in Oregon.

She called a little while ago all teary-voiced in excitement because a
certain B-24 just roared over her head. While she was on the phone, a B-25
passed over. Apparently she annoyed some golfers by letting out a yell.

Called back a few minutes ago to say that Nine-O-Nine was flying around the
pattern. I could just barely make out the distinct, slow drone in the the
background.

Also, apparently, some of the golfers are ****ed off at the noise and
distraction. BOMBS AWAAAAAAAAY!!!

The golfers probably have far more political influence than the pilots, so
beware. If you're inconsiderate of them, don't expect them to be considerate
of you.

Not at all. Golfers out number pilots many times over and often are the
movers and shakers in a community. If you think they have less
political influence than pilots, you are sadly uninformed.

The golfers built a course on a 2.7 mile final for the busiest non-towered
airport in Oregon. They have company jets, Columbia helicopters,
countless IFR and private students flying over all day. They turned down
federal funding to resurface the runway, ironically, because the airport was
too busy to close down for the month.

An annual buzz job by three old bombers, in my opinion, adds to the property
value. My wife and I went out and watched them sitting there in silence on
Saturday night. Beautiful.

But MX is partially correct. It's a very upscale gated community; some of
the streets are gated -from- the gated community. On the other hand,
there's stuff that goes on at Aurora that people don't talk about, and
there's plenty of political money involved there, too.

I didn't say they were right, I simply said they have a LOT more local
influence than do pilots. At least in any community other than maybe an
airpark with a golf course!

They don't have that much influence over Aurora. It's the busiest GA
airport in Oregon.

A few years ago, there was a purple star-spangled PBY Catalina parked out by
the fence and when the P-38 Jeff Ethell was flying crashed,
it was rebuilt at Aurora. There's also government stuff going on in those
hangars that probably only a handful of people know about, but I don't think
the golf community there would have any impact on their operations. It's
not a fight the Charbonneau community could win.

Very, very cool and equally rare!

I rode in Nine-O-Nine on 17 June 1993 as a college graduation present.
Went with my grandfather. It was the first time he'd flown in a B-17 since
getting shot down over Schweinfurt. They feathered the prop, etc and when
I pointed out to him he just looked at me and grinned. We sat in those
nose together by ourselves for what seems like longer than it actually was.
I don't remember ever seeing him smile so much.

After the ride, he and the pilot exchanged autographs. He told the pilot
that one thing he remembered about B-17s is that no two ever sounded or
smelled the same. To this day, however, I can hear and smell Nine-O-Nine as
if it was yesterday.

WTH is she texting?! I swear to God Almighty that if I'm ever flying S.I.C
in a Liberator, I'll have plenty of better things to do that test message on
a cell phone.

Yes, she did appear to be actually sending text messages while
flying as SIC on a B-24.

I'll leave the comments about women drivers/pilots to the peanut
gallery.

And one that I'm sure the FCC turns a blind eye to when the aircraft
is flying at 2000' AGL. FL350 is(or used to be) a different story.

Heck, I've used my cell phone at the top of a mountain peak, much
higher above cell phone towers than 2000'. And that's legal, although
annoying as hell to the other people sitting there (I downclimbed a
bit to not annoy them).

I've also text-messaged my daughter when flying the Warrior to Powell,
WY (yes, the guy in the right seat was flying and was(is) a pilot).

Go ahead. Turn me in. Turn her in. It's your civic duty, man.
