With an ever-increasing number of unmanned aerial vehicles aloft, it seems likely that a collision is inevitable, at least until machine vision and avoidance systems are perfected...has it already happened? Are there any near misses on record?

Dunno about the miss/collision stats but I do notice the Military out of
Beale AFB with the FAA are making available open briefings to pilots
regarding some of their UAV ops and GA.
Perhaps a proactive effort to avoid such events.

There have been two meetings the last few months and from GA pilot reviews
I've heard, they're quite interesting.
