View Full Version : Another 302 question...
I just purchased a ship with a 302 installed and have a question for
any 302 owners out there. When I turn the 302 on, it goes through the
normal boot process; zeros the needle, sits at the serial number/
firmware version for 10 seconds or so, then goes to screen 2. The
strange thing that happens is when the bootup is done and it goes to
screen 2, the needle goes up to around +1 on the dial and pretty much
stays there. It moves up and down ever so slightly, but does not go
back down to zero. Has anyone seen this behavior in their 302? Is it
normal or a malfunction?
I have not flown with it yet, so I can't comment on the operation
while flying.
Thanks,
Dave

Maybe it is set to netto vario?

Dave,
Not sure whether this is the problem but flying in sunny southern
Aridzona I learned to put my hand over the face of the instrument
while powering it up and holding it there for a few seconds. This
keeps the sun from confusing the sensors that center the needle.
Don't hesitate to call the factory if you need further assistance,
I've found them to be very helpful. Contact info at their web page
(FAQs too).

Ted,
I did read some posts regarding that issue last night and tried it
without any effect. I can see that the needle zeros out properly while
booting up. It only moves "up" after the boot process is done and
switches to screen #2.
Bert,
You may be on to something there. I also got an email from another
gentleman that also says it will indicate climb while on the ground in
cruise mode. I don't have a switch for selecting modes, but I could
rig one for a test to see if it will zero when in climb mode.

No need for a switch. The 302 detects climb using the GPS and will
display a circular arrow while in circling mod, and nothing while in
cruise.
Why not just go fly with it and compare to the other vario?
Oh, and be sure to check the TE page and make sure that it's around
100 if not using a TE probe, and near 0 if using a probe.

Tom,
The reason I'm trying to figure this out now is because it'll be a
little while before she flies and I'd like to know if I should send in
the 302 while it's down.
By the way, Gary Kammerer from CAI confirmed that the "netto" mode
will cause this very symptom. I've responded with a question as to why
this happens, but haven't heard back yet. I will check it tonight to
see if it indeed is set to "netto" mode and try changing it to see if
it behaves differently.

Just found this explanation in another thread:
"the issue being when I have set the vario to Netto in the
past, with the glider on the ground, the needle points
to about 1.5kts up....which I have just realised it
what it should do...as it is assuming if the glider
is maintaining altitude it must be in rising air eauivalent
to the sink rate"
It's making sense now. I catch on "eventually".... Ha ha!

I flew with my 302 in "relative" or "super netto" for years and it behaved
just fine. Earlier this spring, I experimented and set it as "netto".
The needle moved up to about 1.5 and stayed put (while on the ground), as I
expected it to. The problem is, it stayes biased that way while thermaling,
so you think you are going up 1.5, and the audio says so too. But, you are
not!--My TE vario and the Altimeter say "You are going nowhere!" I thought I
could mentally compensate for it but I couldn't. I reset back to super netto
and all was well again!

Dave,
If you haven't done so already, you should download the 302 User Manual
from the Cambridge site. Get the 302 Operators Card also, it's a good
quick reference to all the 302 functions.
http://www.cambridge-aero.com/manuals.htm
Make sure your running the latest firmware, I think it's 2.63.
You will probably want to get one of the three 302Utility programs, to
upload flight logs and edit your 302's configuration.

David,
I'm at 2.63 and have all the manuals and such. I even have the utility
program on my PDA but haven't played with it yet. I looked all through
the manuals and although the info is there to explain this netto
thing, I just didn't put two and two together to realize what the
needle was telling me. It makes total sense now. That's a big "DUH" on
my part.
Hartly,
>From what I understand, when the 302 switches to "climb" mode, it also
switches from "netto" to "TE". Yet it sounds like yours stays in
"netto" mode. I'm going to experiment with a manual switch and see if
the needle zeros when I manually switch to "climb" mode.
Thanks for your help guys. I'm getting a good education today. :o)

Dave,
we had the exact same problem on two of our club aircraft just a few
weeks ago, and Garry at CAI gave the same answer.
We found that the default pilot profile ('Club Pilot') had been
altered to 'Netto' by someone who's not owning up to it, and it was an
easy matter to change the profile back to 'Super Netto' and all was
well. You can of course change this via the CAI Utility program which
has the same effect I guess.
Regards, Bernie.

Does the instrument panel come up with the canopy and was the canopy
raised while you made this observation? If so, lower that canopy and
look again.

No, the instrument panel stays down.
Turns out it is in netto mode. So the needle position is right where
it's supposed to be.
Thanks everyone.
