I wondered about that. I served from private to colonel and never heard of
them.

Chaplain \(COL\) Lonnie J. Potter
July 4th 07, 04:35 AM
The United States Corps of Chaplains (USCOC) is a volunteer, non-sectarian
Christian, charitable, non-profit 501(c)3 public service organization,
active in community ministry to everyone, but with special emphasis on aid
to active duty military members, veterans, and their family members. The
USCOC is also active in disaster response activities, providing a needed
ministerial presence for victims and responders.
The USCOC is made up of former and retired military personnel and other
patriotic, public spirited, Christian citizens. Membership is open to
Christian Clergy (Ministers) and Laity (non-ordained Christians), Veterans
and Non-Veterans alike.
Members of the USCOC wear distinctive uniforms when in service for easy
identification. The USCOC also uses ranks and unit designations similar to
those of the U.S. Army but the United States Corps of Chaplains is not an
entity of, nor endorsed by, any branch of the military services or the
United States government,
USCOC Chaplains perform religious support in the communities, by preaching,
teaching, and conducting religious services, in accordance with the tenets
and rules of their Christian tradition, the principles of their faith, and
the dictates of conscience. Chaplain Assistants and Ministry Teams assist
the Chaplains in providing religious support to the community. This
religious support includes providing and/or performing worship services,
rites, sacraments, ordinances, pastoral and spiritual care and religious
education to:
NURTURE THE LIVING, CARE FOR THE DYING, HONOR THE DEAD.
Our Mission is to:
"GLORIFY GOD, PROMOTE PATRIOTISM,
HONOR OUR VETERANS, MINISTER TO ALL."

I'm afraid to ask, but where did you receive your military basic, advanced,
officer, chaplain training? And what army posts did you serve at?
Chaplain \(COL\) Lonnie J. Potter
July 4th 07, 05:33 AM
I am retired US Air Force and Marine Corps (1977-1994) and was a Chaplain's
Assistant during Desert Shield/Storm/Calm. My "advanced" training as a
Chaplain has come "OJT" (on-the-job training) during several military
memorial services, weddings, and during several natural disasters as well as
the crash of flight 5191 in Lexington, KY not long ago. Ordained by God to
help out where I am needed.

Good. Just occasionally I envy the Yanks for having secularism (pretty
much) enshrined in the constitution. Here in UK, where the Anglican church
is a branch of government, chaplains in both the armed services and National
Health Service are paid-for by the taxpayer.

Congradulations, Chappie... err... Col. Chappie.
Question: you said that USCOC was a Christian based organization. What do
non-christian faiths (eg: jewish or even muslim) do for cleric support when
in a war zone?
You do a much needed service for our enlisted: while you may find an atheist
in a foxhole, more likely you will find a solider and his faith.

I'm sure that there are plenty the benefit from the services, endorsed

Those that wish not to partake may also do so.

Real chaplains in the US Armed forces are military officers paid by the
branch of service. I'm afraid "Colonel Potter" is not a real colonel with a
commission signed by the secretary of any US military branch. He alludes to
being an enlisted chaplain's assistant, and now has joined some organization
and assumed some position. In twenty-six years in the US Army, from private
to colonel, I have never heard of this organization.

The chaplains are an effective way for a commander to gauge morale. Chaplains
have wider access across the ranks than even the medical officers. They are
useful in the investigation of compassionate cases and in effecting liaison
with relatives when the situation requires it.

The camo is unnecessary as I doubt his organization gets to hostile fire
zones.
Better to wear khakies or such IMHO

I do not have a problem with that. After all, a war zone chaplain needs
special training for the special needs of the troops. It does not interfere
with the constitution concerning setting up a national religion. It
acknowledges that many of our military personnel have a spiritual side that
must be fulfilled. They are often hundreds or thousands of miles away from
their home congregation. I'm neither Christian, Jew, nor Muslim, nor any
"eastern" religion. I dislike others infringing upon my belief, but I cannot
tolerate others who infringe on others beliefs. Attending a military
religious service is like attending a movie shown by the military: troop
morale. Ya don't HAVE to attend a military religious service, just like you
don't have to attend a military entertainment movie (versus training films)
or USO show.
It is necessary for the troops to operate at maximum efficiancy.

Wow! I didn't realize my post would create such discussion.
The mission of the United States Corps of Chaplains is --
to provide ministerial support and services to communities, families,
and individuals and all possible assistance in response to disasters of any
type;
to provide military honors and assistance to active military personnel,
veterans, and their families;
to promote patriotism in the community;
to defend the Constitution of the United States of America;
to uphold and defend the Bill of Rights, seen as unalienable, given by
God to free men that they might remain free;
to ensure that all citizens, regardless of race, color, religion, sex,
physical characteristics, or national origin, shall have the right and
opportunity to practice their religion as established and guaranteed by that
document which guides this great nation.
Some of our Chaplains are American Red Cross certified Instructors and some
have even received training from the Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA). Law Enforcement as well as some Forensic Chaplains volunteer with
our organization. We have offered our services to post-Katrina efforts and
to the Crash of Flight 5191 in Lexington, KY. We also have some Chaplains
on active duty.
We do not require ordination, however, for the award of the title,
"Chaplain," verified ordination is required. We need Recruiters, Chaplain
Assistants, Personnel Officers, Administrative Officers, Disaster
Responders, YOU!!! With the current outlook for tornados, drought, forest
fires, and a very busy hurricane season, let us remember the Commonwealth of
Kentucky's motto, "United We Stand, Divided We Fall."
If you or anyone you know are interested in becoming a member of an
organization dedicated to nurturing the living, caring for the dying, and
honoring the dead, please feel free to contact us at: www.uscochq.com, or by
emailing Chaplain (Colonel) Lonnie J. Potter, National Recruiting
Coordinator, at or by writing: USCOC, P. O. Box

I'm sorry to add another insight into this seemingly never-ending series of
stupid posts from so-called Chaplain (Colonel) Lonnie J. Potter, who says to
contact him at , not seeming to understand that
chaplains do not carry sidearms, and the US Army does not now carry the Colt
..45 and he seems to have withdrawn his picture in 1980's European
camouflage, which is now not used, and he is not now, nor has he ever been,
a chaplain in the US Army, which is what he wants everybody to think that he
is.
Of course, since this is alt.binaries.pictures.military, he could post his
commission. He could also post to us.military.army, where army people post.
But he won't.
Of course, I could be completely wrong, and he is a colonel in the US army
chaplains corps. It's easy to prove, especially since he has chosen to post
in only one group, and one that does pics.....

Yep, have to agree with you Dave. The world needs balance,
without the Potters and their kind, we tend to get a little Nazi heavy.
Don't need to rapture too early.

It would depend on how many were needed, as well as how many volunteers
signed up (including civilian) Camp followers have a long tradition working
with the military.

Then someone screwed up, big time. I admit that would chafe my ass,
too, but I've known too many grunts to think that was "official."
Sounds like you got stuck with a real dillweed.

Agreed Bob. All is revealed. This is exploitive SPAM!
I think the "Colonel" is in the business of exploiting those who may be
sincere in their beliefs, but are locked into the philosophy of the
Christian right.
Today and in the recent past military organizations in the US and other
countries have provided for those in need of support of their faith with
the military Chaplain.
Chaplains I have known were good men bringing comfort to anguished men
(and now many women). They have risked themselves under fire. Most had a
broad understanding of many Christian denominations and religions and
did not evangelize. They did not bicker over who was Catholic, who was
Baptist, Jew, Muslim or atheist. They brought aid to all without self
aggrandizement or attempting to "save" those comfortable with themselves
not seeking to be "saved."
Chaplains of all faiths have been on the front lines of conflicts when
they can. They have fallen in battle and have been wounded and damaged
by their experiences. They are trained and know how to deal with the
psychological and spiritual trauma troops in the field suffer.
The "Colonel" needs to let the Chaplains do their job. His exploitive
presence can only interfere with that.

When I was in the US Army, 1972-76, I had a couple of friends that were
lobbying to have their religion listed as "Wiccan". IIRC they succeeded
after a while. I supported the effort even though I am an ordained
Presbyterian elder. It is their constitutional right.

Where does he get off presenting himself as a "colonel" without a commission?
I gather even Kentucky colonels have a commission in the state militia.
This sounds as legitimate as styling oneself "Grand Poobah."
