View Full Version : XM weather de-activation with Garmin 396/496

I have a PDA-based XM weather process that spontaneously de-activates
periodically (and of course I don't find out until I fire up the
receiver in the airplane).

Are any 396/496 users having this problem?

What about Flight Cheetah users?

This disscussion has been had here with with 3/496s. IIRC it had to do with
the lack of reauthorization when the GPS had been out of the sattelite's
view for a while. I had assumed it had been cleared up because there hasn't
been a post about it for quite some time.

Is your PDA allowed to go to zero charge during it's down time? If so it
might be forgetting that it was authorized.

FWIW I've gone as long as 5 months without firing up my GPS396 and
it's never had this happen.

Just to make sure I wasn't nuts I checked Google Groups. Here's a link to
the thread.

This thread dates back to 2005 and John Smith wrote this in one of the
posts:

"I stopped by the XM booth at AirVenture and inquired about this.
The rep explained that it was their problem and that it has been fixed
and should not continue to happen."

I have a WxWorx receiver connected to a tablet PC.

This used to happen to me, and it was definitely a pain. To remedy -
I spent a few minutes on WxWorx website, and found a listing in their
FAQ suggesting a software update would fix it. I downloaded their
latest software, and have not experienced the de-activiation in the
last few months.

I think the refresh rate on the license transmission was too
slow/infrequent. Even my GDL69 would loose authorization. It
only takes a few minutes to reauth it, but you need to have a
phone or computer handy to do it.
