As you can tell, I don't have many answers yet. An opportunity has possibly
presented itself to fly - otherwise too darn far for my back to tolerate the
trip.

I'll be there (as I have every year since about 1975 except for some
time overseas in the USAF) for the whole week. Camping at Camp Scholler
as always (way out West by the West end camp store, usually on about
9th, 10th or 11th Street -- look for the yellow "ParasolAirplanes Group"
flag flying over the campsite as well as a ham radio antenna or two)...

We'll be working at the "Flying Colors Glass" booth in the Fly Market
pretty much every day. Gary (the owner) did our stained glass
windows, and he's pretty much a one-man show -- so we spell him during
the day.

Dude...one post in r.a.p and a different one in r.a.o. You shouldn't
hit the beer so hard before posting :-)
From r.a.o:
Attending: Yes
Mode of transport: '71 Arrow
Days: Arrive Sunday, depart following Sunday
Lodging: We don't need no stinking lodging! Give me the N40 and the
unwashed masses any day!
Wednesday party: Um...where else would I be? Besides, I think Jay
appointed me co-something as well. Oh, that's right, Jim points to the
cooler rapidly emptying of beer, I point to the beer store, Paul goes
and gets the beer...that's right. Hmmm, w/o the airplane of minivans,
Paul may need to borrow Jim's vehicle.
Distance: Argh...standby while I fire up the AOPA flight planner. Great
circle route from KLHM-KIOW-KOSH: 1568 nm. Route as planned: 1770 nm.
Actual route: TBD, ask me Wednesday night :-)
From: Sacramento California...well, technically, Orangevale but nobody
knows where that is so I go with Sacramento.
Years attending: Gasp...same as Paul, 5
Working at the event: No...OSH is a vactation, no work involved.
Big floppy hat: Sort of...not like Pauls...depends though, I may hit REI
and get something more along the lines of the Eric Rood model.
Viperdoc[_4_]

Could just be me, but I bought a Tilly when someone told me they were
the best dang hat in the entire world. I measured carefully as directed
by Tilly and ordered my hat. It came and the first time I washed it, it
shrank just like any other hat would shrink.
Under Tilly's guarantee, they sent me another one. Same thing when
washed. It shrank. Both hats are sitting up in the closet unused any
longer. I know I could complain again to Tilly, but for me anyway, two
times was enough.
I don't know, it must be something I'm doing wrong, but for me, the
"Tilly Experience" hasn't been all that good :-)

You have to either wear the hat as it is drying, or get a hat form, adjusted
to the size of your head.
Then, try catching a fly, to see how they land! <g>

I'll have to check the instructions. I don't remember seeing that; just
that the hat wouldn't shrink when washed. I even called Tilly on their
800 number and they didn't say to wear the hat while it dries. Sounds
like a good plan however, although the thought of wearing a wet hat
isn't up there with getting stranded on an island with Raquel Welch by a
long shot!! :-)

Just got back from PIA where the Wis Air National Guard was doing instrument
approaches and touch and goes with several KC135's. We were issued an
immediate departure while one came in on the crossing runway, then issued an
immediate 135 degree right turn to stay out of the downwind leg where a
second KC135 was flying his pattern. Head on a swivel! :)

Actually, a baseball cap is the worst possible choice for OSH. Your
ears will be little stubs of charcoal after three days, if you don't
protect 'em.
Don't ask me how I learned this...
My first few years at OSH I made ALL the mistakes, including:
- Shorts, and no sunscreen
- Insufficient water
- Bad shoes
- Dark-colored hats
- Baseball caps
- Drinking beer you could see through...
The horrorl...

Hey...dorky is "in" at airshows.
Of course, maybe that's one of the reasons young people aren't
flying. Too many dorky hats, and guys wearing dark socks and
sandals...?

I think mine is the REI explorer... About 1/2 the price of the Tilly and is
much better at attracting all the hot airplane groupies who hang out at

Flight to San Marcos and back was 14 mpg average... 52 gallons... Course I
cut the travel time in half. I faired much better on the 100ll price on
that trip, than what we'd get next week... Our 152 had a much better cruise
speed than this 150 does...

From? ...Wichita Falls, TX

out the back.

I'm not sure. I'll find out next week. I think a smaller one - but big
enough to tow a trailer.
There are two others who will be using it, with me.

Funny you should say that. I've got an old Tilly-style hat (an old
Oshkosh hat, actually) that I use at the hotel when I mow the lawn.
(3 hours on a riding lawn mower, in Iowa summer sun.)
After 4 summers Mary insisted on washing it. I, of course, hadn't
noticed anything, but she just rolled her eyes and said it was gross
beyond belief.
It shrank, of course, but one good lawn mowing session produced enough
sweat to let it stretch back out.
And I've now got my 16-year-old son mowing the lawn, so no more
troubles!

I've got to ask Hoover one of these days who made that hat of his. It's
going to end up in the Smithsonian I believe. He's been sitting on,
standing on, walking on, and farting on that hat for as long as I can
remember. That hat has more flying time between his butt and the seat of
his 51 than most of us have total time :-)
I wonder if he ever washed it :-)

I don't burn.. Anywhere. (Ok maybe my nose sometimes (hence the
baseball cap). But I understand you thin haired folks. To be honest,
my biggest problem with hats (of any kind) is that I sweat under them
and get hot altogether. That reminds me, time to schedule a haircut
right before departure. Make it nice and short... :-)

Man, that would be nice. Us fair-skinned lads of German descent
aren't accustomed to tropical sunshine, so we must shield ourselves as
best we can.
The development of sun screens that actually WORK has been a real
Godsend for me. After burning to a crisp my first year, I wore long,
loose khaki pants for the next 15 years at OSH, sweating
accordingly.
It's really only been in the last ten years that I've been able to
stay out in the sun all day, bare-legged, thanks to the development of
modern "lead-shield" sunscreens.

If your sunscreen is from last year, throw it out.
You will burn like a hot dog on "The Mother Of All Grills!"

Old age math...
In 1982 I was 28. 28+50=78. I might make it.
None of my uncles on my father's side have made it past 75, so far.
On my mothers side, they last well into their 80's.

Nope, believe it or not, I didn't hear about that on the internet! <g>
Really, a couple years ago, we went to the beach, and a couple people in my
extended family used the same bottle of SPF 50, (I think) and then went on
with the day, (re-applying repeatably as recommended), and got absolutely
fried. Everyone else in the family that used different stuff was fine.
Soon after we got back, we saw that sunblock can go bad after a year, on the
news or newspaper.
We don't take chances on it, after that experience. Perhaps it is only a
problem with high SPF stuff, or some brands, or how hot it gets where it is
stored, or whatever. Throwing out a $3.00 bottle of sunblock is much better
than spending several days in pain (and the additional risk of skin cancer)
because you are too cheap to buy fresh stock every year.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. I'll bet if you do some goggling,
you will find supporting info on this.

Well, there's your trouble, Jim -- you've gotta buy the real $9
stuff! That $3 Chinese knock-off (made with spent plutonium, or
sawdust, like their "bread") just doesn't last...
