OK, but they're not all as good as this one. They are scanned from
old slides (with varying degrees of success!) and I regret not being
more careful with shooting dates and so on, but they were all taken by
myself and have never been published before. Also they are completely
eclectic, being just a random selection.

That's precisely the pic that I enjoy the most. It's like being in
the time machine, seeing what you saw - as you saw it - and nobody will see
that again.


Don't worry too much about the quality, that can be cleaned up in the
software, so far, these pics are great, thanks.

I'm no expert but I use an ordinary scanner. (Epson Perfection 2400)
and set it to Automatic. It has an adaptor for slides and negatives
and it does work, though it can be a bit fiddly. It can, of course,
scan photos and drawings as well. I believe better results can be
obtaind with a dedicated film scanner, but I just wanted the facility
for infrequent use so went for the cheaper compromise!

One cheaper and simpler option to buying a specialist 35mm scanner I
have seen slide scanning attachments for standard scanners and as far as
I could see they are a backlighting box offering a uniform white source
of light from behind the slide.

Here is a home made option which might be of interest and can be for
just about any size format.

Years ago I had a slide copying attachment that screwed onto the front of an
SLR - it was basically a set of optical elements focused on a slide holder
with a piece of white translucent plastic behind it as a diffuser. The
light source was either a flash gun on the end of an extension lead, or came
from pointing it at the sky, according to choice. Results were reasonable,
if a little contrasty compared with the originals.

I haven't seen one of those for ages (well, except for mine - unfortunately
not much use now, as they don't do DSLR bodies with M42 thread) so I wonder
whether anyone still makes them.

It's not just the cost that's a consideration - the idea of being able to
copy images as photographs instead of as scans has a certain appeal, since
my veteran slide scanner has a tendancy to banding.
