One of the members of my CAP squadron has created a squadron web site. Now he is
looking for a cheap web host. Like most squadron we have just a little money in
the treasury.
Will you recommend a good cheap web host?

Bluehost.com used to be plagued by eastern European crime rings using stolen
identities to create throwaway phishing sites, but they cleaned up their act
quite a bit since they offloaded much of that business to a less-reputable
peer. Fairly cheap, but you get what you pay for and if there's a problem
I'm not sure there's anybody you can call to get immediate support.
If you want -real- webhosting with native 24/7 support you would want to try
somebody like Integra.net and expect to spend ~ $10 to $30 a month for
combined e-mail, web and domain hosting. (IE, you provide the web content
but they host the whateveryourCAPdomainis.com zonefile and
spam/virus-filtered email addresses with those domains.)

There are a bazillion cheap web hosting sites - it all depends on how
cheap you want to go and what your requirements are. One of the bazillion
providers is http://www.godaddy.com. They are also a domain name registrar.
You can even buy web hosting from Yahoo:

Try this site. They are cheap, but have good technical support.

I'd recommend www.hostpc.com/hosting. They have annual plans as low as
$25. There are cheaper hosting services out there, but it would be
difficult to find one that has the customer support they do at that
price. I've got our EAA chapter's site there. (1310.org)

'cheap' describes Godaddy really good.

Contact me at the gmail. Free is better than cheap when it comes to
aviation related non-profits :-)

As well as great service (in most cases). Sometimes when you are
having trouble with their JVM (say in servlets) it can be hard to get
help because their people who understand Java are well hidden but for
"normal" people web development they are quite good.

I hope I don't sound like an advertisement. (I don't make anything from
this.) HostPC has a sale going on until midnight EDT July 24th. Use
coupon code hostingcon and use Paypal, and get 1/2 off any hosting plan.
That makes their lowest price plan $12.50/year. Not much different
than a free service, and there's no ads on the pages.

I have been happy with 1&1's "Business" package on Linux, which is
normally about $10 a month. You might be happy with their "Beginner" or
"Home" packages which are normally $3 and $4 a month. They often run
sales or specials for the first few months at a reduced rate. This
includes at least one domain registration.
If there is another CAP squadron in your area, perhaps you can go in
together with them to save money. Unless you're putting full-motion HD
video of every flight you take on your Web site, you probably won't go
over the disk space or transfer limits, even with several squadrons on
the site. You could pick a package that lets you register a domain for
each site (like metropolis-cap.com and kleinstadt-cap.com), or register
a more general higher-level site (involving the name of your state or
region) and have subdomains (like metropolis.elbonia-cap.com and
kleinstadt.elbonia-cap.com).
Standard disclaimers apply; I don't get money or other consideration
from any companies mentioned.

Yea, there is no way National would ever approve of using an ad-
supported web hosting for CAP (because it constitutes a U.S. gov't
endorsement of the products). There was just a big article in the CAP
magazine about being very careful when working with other non-profits
to avoid giving the impression that CAP endorses other non-profits,
much less ads for for-profits.

Check out 1and1.com. I have had great service and depending on what
you want, you can get web services for as low as $3.99 a month.
