I meant that ladder-looking thing just behind the gear. To my
ignorant eye, it looks like somebody left the stairs out, but I'm
assuming I'm WAYYYY wrong.

Fixed Steps/ladder fairly common on some older aircraft.

What Bellanca? That is a Stinson V-77; it has a fixed boarding ladder
attached.
