Narromine Cup Week 2007
Narromine Cup Week 2007
Plans are well underway for one of the most popular events on the gliding
calendar, Narromine Cup Week, to be held from 18 to 24 November inclusive.
If you are planning to attend then book your accommodation early.
This will be the 11th year of Narromine cup week.
The Narromine Cup gliding event is a promotion established
between the Narromine Council and the Narromine Gliding Club, the local
gliding club. The concept was to hold a non commercial gliding event and to
offer the basic requirement to allow pilots to achieve their personal best
performances in a friendly non competitive atmosphere. A cup would be
awarded for the best performance over three flights on a handicapped scoring
system. This would allow a large cross section of pilots and aircraft
performance who would not normally enter competitions or fly from another
airfield to participate and to be competitive. It is established as an
opportunity to encourage cross country enthusiasts to use the whole gliding
day to achieve the best possible performance.
The first cup week attracted 9 visiting aircraft and from that time the
event has grown each year and has become an important calendar event in
Australian Gliding. This week has become one of the very few gliding event
in Australia that is held at the same site each year. In 2003 and 2004 the
event attracted more than 70 pilots. Some smaller gliding clubs bought their
fleet of aircraft and are taking advantage of the coaching program
established by our organising committee and the GFA coaching group.
The Narromine Gliding Club is a small regional based group. The members who
donate their time for this week are just 6 members committed to the concept
of the cup week and the promotion of Narromine and cross country soaring. As
the number of participants grows it is a challenge to increase our number of
volunteers. This year we have started our planning early with the
expectation of more than 80 visiting pilots. The Orana
Soaring Club has arranged the following program and plan for financially
support from sections of the gliding community and the local businesses. The
support sought from the GFA, NSWGA, Local council and Local business is
pivotal to the success of the week as a major gliding event.
1. A coaching program for Silver to Diamond badge cross country
flight. Participation by the Australian and state coaches.
Sponsored by The Gliding Federation of Australia
2. Daily seminar/training sessions between 9.00am and 10.00 in the
auditorium
This year the program will address. Evaluating gliding weather, safe towing,
advanced coaching, lookout (see and avoid),
Sponsored by The New South Wales Gliding Association
3. Prizes for the "Best performance by a novice Silver C pilot" and
"Longest flight of the week"
Sponsored by Narromine local business
4. Winner of the Narromine Cup
Sponsored by the Narromine Gliding Club
5. Preparation of the airport and facilities
Sponsored by the Narromine Council
The organisers will provide each day a weather briefing, operations
briefing, daily seminar, assistance with task planning, official
observers, launch and assistance with flight verification. Fees charged for
the week is a $30 contribution by each pilot for the collection of weather
using the Cu-Sonde. Tows will be charged at club rate.
The club is a fully licence facility within the new
Narromine Aviation Museum Complex which also houses the Museum, Narromine
Aero club and Auditorium. Full catering is provided at very reasonable
prices to ensure that visitors have a friendly, fun, safe week gliding and
make many new flying friends.
Camping is available on site at the Airport Caravan Park.
Two motels, Two hotels, Two caravan parks provide accommodation in the town.
