View Full Version : A Red-Letter Day in Iowa
Jay Honeck
August 14th 07, 04:19 AM
Let the world know that on this day, Monday, August 13, 2007, at 11:30
AM CDT, our son, Joseph John Honeck, III did successfully solo fly a
1973 Cessna 150L, tail number N11435, to three successful takeoffs
(and, thankfully, landings) at Iowa City Municipal Airport.
To say that he is (and we are) busting with pride would be an
understatement of epic proportions. He's worked hard to get this far,
and has earned this milestone -- I suspect his feet may soon be
touching the ground!

Congrats to Joe..
but dang.. those planes are getting old.. I had to go look up my log book
that N-number was just too familiar..
All of the N-numbers at my college flight school were.. N11xxx... from 392
up through 512.. but not 435.. at least one not in my logbook.. and they
were brand new when I was flying them.

Congrats, Joseph.
Even though it's been almost 40 years since my first solo, I still remember
the thrill. But, they didn't give ME a T-shirt when I did mine :(
It won't be long until he says: "Dad, can I have the key to the plane?"

Well, they don't exactly give you a shirt. As with mine (and my
wife's), you provide the shirt, and the CFI draws/writes the date,
location, and anything else they might want to add (wind?) on the
shirt.
My CFI drew a guy (God? Zeus?) blowing wind down on my little
airplane, cuz I soloed on a fairly windy day, along with the N number,
airport, and date. Mary's is "just the facts", while Joe's has a few
artistic elements.
Depends on the CFI, I suppose.
In East Troy, where I learned to fly, your shirt went up on the FBO
wall, and you didn't get it back until you got your ticket. This was
a good incentive to finish! They don't do that here in Iowa City --
you just take your shirt with you.

As wiser heads have pointed out, now the REAL learning begins for him.
It's fun to celebrate -- and we have -- but too many "pilots" quit
after the solo flight. And, as others have said, now is the time he
starts learning the ingrained safety habits that will carry through
all of his piloting years.
It's gonna be tough for him to finish up before school starts (just a
week or two away!), and once his senior year gets going, he's busy-
busy-busy...
Worse, his flight instructor is going to Idaho after Labor Day, so
it'll be crunch time for Joe now...

Congratulations Joseph,
It's a fantastic feeling and takes years to wipe the grin off your face,
(even then it's still there. After 25 years I love reliving the moment).
Jay I have enjoyed hearing about your flying adventures over the years. You
seem to have the knack of making them sound as exciting as they really are.
Now I look forward to hearing a proud father boast about his son and his
adventures. I love the way your family fly away together and now there is a
whole new chapter starting.
Congratulations, happy landings and tailwinds.

If you would give the kid a couple days off from working at the Inn, I'm
certain he would be able to knock out some hours in a day or two.

A Very Big Congrats. Just think Jay, in a while you'll be able let Joe
use Atlas to run some errands for you <VBG>.
BTW, don't you have another pilot waiting in the wings? <VVBG>
Just think, The Flying Honecks. Has a nice sound, doesn't it?
Another great day for you and Mary.

Yep, our daughter, Rebecca, is 13 now. She runs hot and cold on
flying, but has shown some recent interest, especially with all the
attention Joe has garnered!
Funny how that works...

Congratulations to Joe and the proud parents. I know the
feeling. We have been diving for 7 years but no trip was as special
as the Bahamas trip last March when we accompanied our daughter for
her open water certification. I had the honor of being her first
buddy after she got certified. We, parents, are always proud of our
children's achievement, but the pride and joy go up exponentially when
they follow our footsteps sharing our passion.
Seven years ago, we signed her up for scuba diving training at
the same time with us but she quit 10 minutes into the first pool
session when the instructor asked her to do 6 laps. It took her quite
a few years to gain more confidence in the water to resume and
complete her training. I have high hope that the same thing will
happen with flying. It took us almost 5 years just to get her in the
little plane with us. I can not say that we get her hooked, but she
had taken half a dozen trips in the last 2 years in our Cardinal with
a long cross country trip from New York to Michigan. She started her
veterinary training yesterday. I'm looking forward to seeing her
picking up another of our hobbies few years down the road when she is
done with her schooling.
I'd bet that you and Mary are looking forward to the day that
Rebecca will conquer the sky on her own ;-)

I think that was the instructors mistake. When I did my training, the six
laps came the last session before the open water certification dive. I
remember a few people really struggling for those six laps, but after eight
weeks, they weren't about to give up.
Sort of like doing stalls on an intro ride, don't you think?

Well, the jury is still out on Bec. Some days she's adamantly ANTI-
flying, while the next day she's flying the Kiwi, and truly enjoying
it.
I suppose that's the definition of a 13-year-old girl, isn't it?
;-)
Now that her brother is garnering all this attention, she's kinda
perked up about flying again... I hope she shows an interest, but we
don't believe in pushing, so we'll just have to wait and see....

These are laps across an Olympic pool, so ~50m per, right?

Hey, my instructor did stalls with me on my intro ride! :D
There's something to be said for the draw that knowing you can make the
plane start and stop flying at will. It can help "seal the deal", and
make a prospective student more confident that they could indeed
complete the training.

Yep, it's best not to push, because when you do, they usually go the
opposite way...

True, if you can stomach stalls on your first lesson, you are probably
truly ready to fly.
However, if we're trying to make flying accessible, scaring the crap
out of prospective students (AKA: "Customers") on their first flight
is a pretty dumb thing for a CFI to do.

Knowing how to swim should be the prerequisite to scuba diving
but I agreed that asking students to do 6 laps (600 meters) was a bit
too much. Our scuba instructor happened to be a college professor, we
learned quite a bit from him but his style of teaching was unsuitable
to some new recreational divers.
One of our flight instructors was also a college professor with
similar demanding style of teaching. One day while hanging around the
airport, we chatted with a prospective student before and after his
introductory flight. It was quite disheartening to see the replacement
of enthusiasm with apprehension. In an hour of flight, this stern
instructor gave him a sampling of all phases of flight including steep
turn, slow flights and stalls! We never saw the poor guy back at the
airport again.
With a sample of one in each case, I can not draw the conclusion
that college professors don't make good instructors. However, in
these two examples, it was obvious the 'fire hose' stype of teaching
were not suitable for newbies.

Some explain this to me.
If you have a "family" airplane, does each pilot in the family get added
to the policy as a named insured as though it were a partnership /
multiple owner aircraft?

As was explained to me by a psycologist, "Universities are basically
sheltered workshops for people with Asperger's Disorder."
Why would you expect them to have social skills?

Hi Jay and congratulations to Joseph John Honeck. When I soloed, I
went to imagestation.com and made a coffee cup with the details of the
solo, N number, plane type, and location on one side and a picture of
me and my instructor in front of the plane on the other side. It is
easier to brag about your accomplishments if all you have to do is
have a cup of some beverage with that special cup.
Just thought you might want to prolong the feeling ...

I've got three teenagers and an 8 year old. I know what you mean...
John
Jay,
Congrats to Joe!
Time to get Becca in a glider, so she can solo on her 14th birthday...
just to show her brother up! :-)

What's the minimum age in the U.S. to solo a powered
aircraft? I looked though FAR 61 but can't see it. Here in Canada it's
14 years. Kind of dumb, when you realize that a kid can't drive a car
solo until he has his license at 16.
Gotta be 17 in Canada to hold the PPL.

Joe could've soloed last year, when he was 16.

Same here. That's why we didn't want him to start flight lessons
until he was nearly 17...

In the US you must be 16 to solo a powered aircraft and 14 to solo a
glider. To the a private certificate you must be 17.

Or 16 for a Private glider license!
My daughter took me for one of my first glider rides shortly after her 16th
birthday, when the ink was literally still wet on her ticket. This was
particularly memorable because: 1) I was then a total non-pilot, and 2) As her
parent, I had first-hand knowledge that this sweet little girl was far from
infallible.

The Rule of Four with a sixteen year-old:
She sees herself as "almost" ....... 20
You see her as, still, "almost" ...... 12
You both are mostly right. :-)

USA: 14 to solo gliders, 16 for a private certificate.
16 to solo airplanes, 17 for a private certificate.
