View Full Version : PIREP: Iowa State Fair

If you're looking for a great fly-in destination, it's hard to beat
the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. It's a true piece of traditional
Americana, with every cliche from pork chops on a stick to funnel
cakes to politicians kissing babies. Throw in high-stepping horses,
bulls the size of Toyotas, carnival rides, baking contests, and every
deep-fried snack known to man, and you've got some idea of what a day
at the fair is like.
This year we "flew the Subaru", which allowed us to partake in the on-
site beer and margaritas -- very nice on what turned out to be a sunny
and warm day. In fact, it was a darned-near perfect day, marred only
by presidential candidates riding rough-shod through the crowd,
surrounded by handlers, photographers, and TV crews.
Over pulled-pork sandwiches in the Iowa Pork Producers tent, the
consensus of the (largely farmer) crowd appeared to be that all these
dumb ass politicians should go back to wherever they came from, and re-
apply for candidate status in about a year -- a much more appropriate
time to be stumping for an election that is still over 15 months
away. Quite frankly, it seems that the only people who care what
they are saying is the media -- everyone else I spoke with agreed that
it is just way too far in the future to even be discussing yet.
Anyway, I digress. If you're looking for a really fun flying
destination, the fair runs through Sunday...

Yer darn right, Jay, and we'd be attending again this year if the
commute from Oregon weren't so long. A lovely fairground, packed with
genuine hometown entertainment and great food...and folks so nice, the
fair's website offers free ringtones!

I'm also told the controllers at DSM are very cordial and pleasant to GA
flyers, and of course if you grew up at an uncontrolled airport there's
always room on the ramp at Ankeny. Heck, I'd offer rides if I hadn't
moved away this summer.
Enjoy a corn dog for me, dear.

Oh, my God -- I didn't mention the corn dogs!
These are the most amazing things -- NOTHING like those abominations
you can buy for your kids in the freezer section!
They dip the corn dogs in thick batter right in front of you, and drop
them in the hot grease. A minute later, you've got the most amazingly
delectable meal -- a hot dog on a stick!
You wouldn't believe how fantastic one is, right out of the oil. Like
a fresh donut, but corn bready... Absolutely a must-have at the
fair...

First time I went to the Fair was in the 1920's (well before most on
this group were born). Lots of good hard working people went in those
days. More bib overalls than suits.

out of storms way by coming to TX :o)

Well, we will have to settle for the Western Idaho Fair here in
Boise. Sounds pretty similar to what you have in Iowa...
